San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Gulls have announced that goaltender Tom Lawson has been named the Jewelry Designs by Stuart Benjamin & Company and Kristy's MVP Player of the Month for February. Lawson, who also took home the honors in November, will be presented the award in a pre-game ceremony before Saturday's game against the Las Vegas Wranglers.

Lawson, who played in 11 of San Diego's 12 games, posted a 4-7-0 record with a 2.64 goals-against average and .921 save percentage in February. He also recorded his second shutout of the season (15th career) in a 3-0 victory over the Phoenix Roadrunners Feb. 24.

The 6-foot-5-inch, 200-pounder from Whitby, Ontario started the month losing six straight even though he stopped 181 of 200 shots in that span (.905 save percentage). In the last five games, however, Lawson was 4-1-0 with a 1.98 goals-against average and .940 save percentage. The Colorado Avalanche, San Diego's NHL affiliate, originally assigned Lawson to the Gulls in early October. In 29 appearances overall for San Diego, he's 14-13-2 with a 2.77 GAA and .912 save percentage. He's also appeared in four games for the American Hockey League's Lowell Lock Monsters, going 1-2-1 with a 3.68 GAA and .880 save percentage.

Lawson played the last two seasons with the AHL's Hershey Bears, posting a combined 23-26-2 record with a 2.55 GAA, .923 save percentage and six shutouts. He recorded two consecutive shutouts last season and was named Hershey's Rookie of the Year in 2003-04.

The 26-year-old netminder was named the United Hockey League's Best Goaltender, Playoff MVP and First-Team All-Star in 2002-03 after leading the Fort Wayne Komets to the Colonial Cup Championship. Lawson led the UHL with a 2.00 GAA and seven shutouts in 2002-03, while posting an 11-1 record and 1.68 GAA in the playoffs.
