
Late Surge Lifts T-Birds Over Bighorns, 96-89

RIO RANCHO, N.M. The Bighorns took an 81-68 lead into the fourth quarter, but the New Mexico Thunderbirds outscored Reno 28-8 in the final frame to escape with a 96-89 victory Friday night in the Santa Ana Star Center.
The huge fourth quarter handed Reno its second-straight loss against New Mexico and third-straight defeat overall. Nick Fazekas led the `Horns with 19 points, but the Thunderbirds' late-game defense proved to be the difference.
New Mexico was led by Dar Tucker, who poured in 25 points off the bench. Shane Edwards added 16 points and 12 rebounds for the T-Birds, who salvaged the win despite shooting just 38.4% from the field.
The Bighorns got double-doubles from Patrick Ewing, Jr. (15 points, 12 rebounds) and Aaron Miles (14 points, 10 assists) in the losing effort.
