Modesto Nuts News Release

Modesto, C.A. - An early lead for the Modesto Nuts did not hold up in a 3-2 loss to the High Desert Mavericks on Tuesday night at John Thurman Field.

Dom Nunez scored when Emerson Jimenez cranked a two-out RBI double in the second to put the Nuts (12-19) on the board first. Despite outhitting the Mavs (21-11), the Nuts struggled to tack on to their lead throughout the game leaving eleven runners on base and going 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position.

Ryan Castellani (L, 1-2) got off to a great start for the Nuts. He had allowed just one hit through his first six innings. Castellani worked around a pair of walks in the sixth, but four hits in the seventh plated three runs and knocked the Nuts' righty out of the game. After a single and a walk to start the inning, Seth Spivey came to the plate with the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position. Spivey hit a groundball toward second that got a bad hop and jumped over Forrest Wall's head and into right for a two-run single. The Mavs added one more in the inning.

Nunez delivered a RBI double in the eighth to pull the Nuts to within one but was stranded in scoring position. The Nuts also stranded the potential tying run in scoring position in the ninth.

Felix Carvallo (W, 3-0) tossed 2.1 innings out of the 'pen and allowed just one run. Shane McCain (S, 1/2) worked the final 1.2 innings with three K's.

Game two of the three-game set with the Mavs is scheduled for Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Coverage on ModestoNuts.com will start at 7:00 p.m. Listen live online.
