Late runs sink Canaries

Lincoln, NE - The Sioux Falls Canaries (10-17) held a 2-1 lead going into the bottom of the eighth inning, but a run in the eighth and a run in the ninth allowed the Lincoln Saltdogs (17-10) to walk-off with a 3-2 win over the Birds on Saturday night at Haymarket Park.

The Canaries took the lead in the top of the third inning. Joe Anthonsen singled and got into scoring position by stealing his 12th base of the season. Anthonsen went to third on a groundout by Tim Hutting, and scored on a groundout by Cody Haerther. Anthonsen scored for a seventh consecutive game, and gave the Canaries a 1-0 lead.

Lincoln tied the game in the bottom of the third. Tycen Povey singled and advanced to second on a walk by Josh Burrus. Albenis Machado laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third, and a groundout by Phil Hawke allowed Povey to score and tie the game, 1-1.

The Birds grabbed back the lead in the fourth inning. Cory Harris and Trevor Lawhorn started the inning with back-to-back singles. Patrick Reilly laid down a bunt to move Lawhorn to second and Harris to third, and Harris came in on a passed ball to give the Canaries a 2-1 advantage over Lincoln.

The Birds held the lead until the late comeback by Lincoln. Lincoln tied the game in the eighth inning when Brandon Jones hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Pichi Balet and knot the score, 2-2. Then in the ninth, Machado singled and scored on a double by Phil Hawke for the 3-2 Saltdogs win.

Forrest Clay (1-0) pitched 0.2 innings, retiring both batters he faced, to get the win in relief for Lincoln. Patrick Lawler (3-1) suffered his first defeat in allowing the ninth inning run to the Saltdogs.

The Canaries conclude the weekend set with the first-place Lincoln Saltdogs on Sunday night at 6:05 p.m. The Birds return to Sioux Falls Stadium on Tuesday, August 11, when they will begin a three-game series with the St. Paul Saints. Tuesday's game will be a "Reading Program Day" at the ballpark.
