New York Boulders News Release
(Newark, NJ, June 25) - Alex Bardiguez' eighth-inning RBI single brought in Mike Richard to lead the Newark Bears to a 3-2 victory over the Rockland Boulders at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. The run came after Boulders starter Jon Velasquez balked Richard to second, and spoiled a tremendous effort from the right-hander, who retired 19-of-20 batters at one point.
Both starters struggled early as Rockland pushed across a pair in the first off Newark ace Mike Ness. Chris Valencia led off the game with a walk, was wild pitched to second, and scored on Ryan Mollica's single to put the visitors ahead early. Keith Brachold singled Mollica to third and Ryan Scoma converted with a sac fly to plate the second run.
Newark took just three batters to tie the score, as Richard singled and Bardiguez walked to start things off. Both runners advanced on a passed ball and came home on a wild pitch with Daryle Ward at the plate. In spite of the rough start, Velasquez found his rhythm and was nearly untouchable thereafter.
On the heels of yesterday's slugfest 18-12 victory for Rockland over Quebec, more of the same appeared to be in store, but both starters took charge in quickly firing blanks over the next six innings until the hosts were able to push across the decisive run in the eighth. Again, it was Richard who got things started with a one-out single. Velasquez then hurt his own cause, balking Richard to second, and the speedster came on when the Bardiguez bouncer found the hole.
Ness allowed seven hits in eight innings to improve to 4-1, with Jorge Vasquez working a perfect ninth to earn his league-leading ninth save. Velasquez fell to 1-4 in taking the hard-luck loss, scattering just five hits while fanning eight and walking just two over the eight-inning complete game effort.
The setback marked the start of a seven-game road trip which will see the Boulders play three more games in Newark before heading to Quebec for a weekend set against the first-place Capitales. After a day off next Monday, the team will return to Rockland for a big three-game holiday series against the New Jersey Jackals on July 3-4-5. The July 3 contest will be 3-D fireworks night, as the first 4,000 fans will receive 3-D glasses with which to enjoy the Fireworks Extravaganza show, courtesy of Ramsey Auto Group. On Wednesday, July 4, the Boulders celebrate with Dollar Hot Dogs as well as a Hot Dog Eating Contest, with a Fireworks Extravaganza show after the game.
