Stockton Ports News Release

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes pushed across the winning run in the top of the ninth on Tuesday night, breaking a 2-2 tie and sending the Stockton Ports to a late-inning loss at Banner Island Ballpark. A one-out single in the top of the ninth by Ariel Sandoval sent the Quakes to a 3-2 win that evened up the series at a game apiece.

Stockton opened the scoring in the top of the first facing former Ports pitcher Brett Anderson, who started the game on a Major League rehab assignment for the Dodgers. James Harris opened the first with a single and went to second when Mikey White reached on a dropped fly ball in right by Yusniel Diaz. After B.J. Boyd struck out, Joe Bennie hit a weak tapper to third for an infield single. The ball was fielded by Michael Ahmed who made an errant throw to first, allowing Harris to score and give the Ports a 1-0 lead. With runners at the corners, Bennie would steal second and coax a throw down from catcher Will Smith, on which White advanced down the line and scored from third to give Stockton a 2-0 advantage.

Anderson would record back-to-back strikeouts to end the first inning, the start of six straight strikeouts recorded by the left-hander. Anderson's first seven outs recorded were via the strikeout and he would not factor into the decision by game's end. He went four innings and allowed two unearned runs on three hits while walking one and striking out eight. He threw 64 pitches, 44 for strikes.

The Quakes' first run of the game came in the form of a one-out solo homer by Johan Mieses off Ports starter James Nail to make it a 2-1 contest. Nail would keep the Quakes out of the run column over the next two frames but surrender the tying run in the fifth. Smith opened the inning with a single, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single by Sandoval to tie the game at 2-2.

Nail worked into the sixth inning and left the game with runners at the corners and one out. Corey Miller came in from the bullpen and got Smith to hit a grounder to third on which the Ports threw home and tagged out Diaz trying to score from third. Miller then struck out Sandoval to end the inning. It was the start of two-and-two-thirds perfect innings worked by Miller, who went on to strike out four of the eight batters he faced.

Nail would be rendered a no-decision, going 5.1 innings and allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out three.

After Miller's outing, Carlos Navas (3-6) came on to pitch the ninth and issued a leadoff walk to Mieses. Two batters later, Sandoval singled to center to score Mieses and break the tie, giving the Quakes a 3-2 advantage.

Navas suffered the loss after allowing one run on one hit while walking one and striking out two in the ninth.

After Alex Burgos pitched a scoreless fifth inning in relief of Brett Anderson, Isaac Anderson (3-0) entered to begin the sixth and would go on to pitch four scoreless frames to close out the ballgame. Anderson struck out the final four batters in a row and had the final six outs he recorded come in the form of strikeouts. He picked up the win after allowing two hits and striking out seven in four innings.

Stockton struck out a season-high 17 times in the contest.

The Ports and Quakes play the rubber match of their three-game series on Wednesday night at Banner Island Ballpark. Kyle Friedrichs (3-4, 4.39 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Rancho Cucamonga right-hander Felipe Gonzalez (2-5, 6.16 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. PDT.
