See-Saw Tips North as Giants Win
August 3, 2016 - California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release
The Bakersfield Blaze laughed heartily in the middle innings, but the visiting San Jose Giants chortled both first and last, and dealt the Blaze a 9-6 defeat on Tuesday night at Sam Lynn Ballpark in Bakersfield.
The see-saw in this one was covered in "threes."
The Giants got the first batch, scoring twice in the 1st and once more in the 2nd to take a 3-0 lead on Eddie Campbell.
But the Blaze fought back quickly. Austin Wilson and Justin Seager each came up with RBI singles in the 2nd, Wilson mashed a three-run homer in the 4th, and Jay Baum banged a run home in the 5th to give Bakersfield their iteration of a three-run lead at 6-3 in the 5th.
Then it was San Jose's turn once again. After three strong innings from Campbell, Eddie seemed to run out of gas in the 6th. Three straight Giants reached to begin the frame, and an error plated a run to bring San Jose to within two.
The Blaze went to the pen for Jake Zokan (L, 3-1), who to this point had been nearly perfect. In a rare twist, Zokan was human on Tuesday night, inducing a double play before giving up a triple and a double that pushed the Giants in front.
And one inning later, San Jose added two more off Zokan for another three run lead, this time at 9-6 in favor of the visitors.
That is, unfortunately for Blaze fans, how it would end. Dusten Knight (W, 2-1) settled things down for San Jose after spot-started Conner Menez struggled through 4.1 innings, and D.J. Snelten and Reyes Moronta (S, 8) worked the final two frames to polish it off.
Vinny Nittoli pitched the 8th and 9th for the Blaze, posting a strong effort in a losing cause.
The seven game homestand comes to its conclusion with a 7:30pm Winning Wednesday contest against San Jose. Fans are encouraged to bring an E-Waste item to the park to get in free.
