Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Portland, Maine - The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (16-17) overcame a four-run deficit by scoring 10 runs in the middle three innings and defeated the Sea Dogs (11-21) 10-7 on Saturday afternoon at Hadlock Field. A rubber match will decide the five-game series on Sunday afternoon.
Portland scored four runs in the bottom of the first off of Nabil Crismatt (W, 4-1). A solo homer by Chad De La Guerra got the scoring started. Two batters later, Cole Sturgeon doubled in Tony Renda to make it 2-0. Later in the inning with the bases loaded and two out, Nick Lovullo hit an RBI double down the left field line to extend the Sea Dogs' lead to 4-0.
Binghamton began its comeback with two runs in the fourth off of Kevin McAvoy (L, 0-2). The Rumble Ponies added four runs on just one hit in the fifth (2 BB, 2 HBP, E) to take a 6-4 lead, then Binghamton scored four more runs on six hits in the sixth inning. The big blow was a three-run homer by Patrick Mazeika to make it 10-5.
Crismatt battled through five innings to earn the win. The righty allowed five runs on five hits over five innings, while walking four and fanning three.
McAvoy allowed five earned runs on four hits in 4.1 innings. He struck out six while walking three and hitting three batters.
The Sea Dogs had three late-inning rallies that fell just short. Portland brought the tying run to the plate by loading the bases in both the seventh and eighth innings, but were only able to muster a run in each frame. Portland again brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but Eric Hanhold retired Sturgeon to end the game and pick up the save (4).
The Sea Dogs stranded 15 runners in the ballgame (11 in the final five innings), while Binghamton left nine men on base.
The Sea Dogs and Binghamton Rumble Ponies (Mets affiliate) wrap-up their five-game series on Sunday afternoon with a 1:00 PM first pitch at Hadlock Field. Righty Travis Lakins makes his fourth start of the season for Portland. Right-hander Marcos Molina (0-3, 8.24) takes the mound for the fifth time for the Ponies.
Radio coverage on the U.S. Cellular Sea Dogs Radio Network begins at 12:45 PM. MiLBTV coverage starts at 12:55 PM. Tickets can be purchased at seadogs.com or 207-879-9500.
