Late Night in Amarillo, Part 2
May 20, 2021 - Texas League (TL)
Midland RockHounds News Release
Tuesday night it was a three-hour rain delay. Wednesday night, it was extra innings.
The Amarillo Sod Poodles edged the RockHounds, 3-2, in 12 innings in game two of a six-game series in the Panhandle that has, so far, taken the clubs into "Late Night, Amarillo."
Dominic Fletcher drive in (designated runner) Alek Thomas with an opposite field single to left field in the last of the 12th to give the Sod Poodles their fourth consecutive win and send the 'Hounds to their fourth straight defeat.
As much, or more, than the winning hit, the game was an absolute "statistical buffet:"
- The pitching staffs combined for THIRTY-THREE strikeouts (Amarillo pitchers whiffed 18 and the RockHounds staff had 15 K's)
- The RockHounds had one hit after the seventh inning ... a go-ahead double in the 11th inning from Tyler Ramirez
- Amarillo had on hit after the SIXTH inning ... Fletcher's game-winner
- On Tuesday, Amarillo scored 10 runs in six innings (the Sod Poodles didn't hit in the last of the seventh)
- Wednesday, the two TEAMS combined for 12 hits in 12 innings
- The RockHounds took a 2-1 lead in the 11th (on Ramirez's double)
- In the last of the 11th, the RockHounds allowed no hits, turned a double play and (reliever) Zach Jackson had a strikeout
- In that half inning, Amarillo tied the game. How???? See "Kibbles & Bits" (below)
Kibbles & Bits
In the Amarillo 11th inning, RockHounds reliever Zach Jackson struck out Amarillo's D.J. Burt, but the third strike eluded catcher Collin Theroux, allowing Burt to reach on a strikeout / passed ball and designated runner Luis Basabe to advance to third base. So, instead of a runner at second and one out, the Sod Poodles had runners at the corners with no one out.Alexis Pantoja grounded into a 6-4-3 double play (with Nick Allen making a terrific play to start it) with the tying run scoring on the play. Ouch.
