Norfolk Tides News Release
The Columbus Clippers scored an unearned run in the top of the 10th inning, knocking off the Tides 6-5 Friday night in front of 8,599 fans at Harbor Park.
With the score tied at 5-5, Columbus third baseman Andy Phillips led off the inning and struck out against Tides reliever Juan Padilla (3-2) on a pitch in the dirt. Tides catcher Fernando Lunar blocked the ball, but his throw to first base was not handled cleanly by Victor Diaz, allowing Phillips to reach safely. After a single and a walk loaded the bases, Phillips came in to score on a wild pitch with two outs, putting the Clippers up 6-5.
In the bottom of the tenth inning, Columbus' Sam Marsonek induced Mike DiFelice to ground into a game-ending double play to earn his seventh save of the year.
Norfolk took a 5-2 lead into the 8th inning, but Columbus rallied with three runs on four hits off of Tides reliever Steve Colyer, who did not register an out. With the loss, the Tides fell to 41-2 when leading after seven innings this year.
The Tides plated all of their runs in the fourth inning, as Ron Calloway and Rodney Nye connected for RBI singles and Chris Basak connected for a two-run single off of Columbus starter Jorge De Paula.
Jason Scobie turned in another fantastic outing for Norfolk, as he allowed just two runs on six hits in 7.0 innings of work. The right-hander, who was named to the International League team for the Triple-A All-Star Game on July 13th, struck out six and walked one.
The Tides travel to Richmond for a two-game set over the weekend, before having Monday - Wednesday off for the All-Star Break. Saturday's game time from The Diamond in Richmond is set for 7:00 pm.
