Buffalo Bisons game notes

July 8, 2005 - International League (IL1)
Buffalo Bisons News Release

TODAY'S GAME: Tonight, the Buffalo Bisons open up their final series before the All-Star break with the first game of a three-game set against the Rochester Red Wings at Dunn Tire Park (7:35 p.m.). The Herd is looking to bounce back from a 1-3 road trip that included a pair of losses to the Wings at Frontier Field. Starting for the Bisons will be RHP Jeremy Guthrie, who threw seven solid innings in a victory over Ottawa on Sunday. In his last 11 starts, he is 7-3 with a 4.43ERA (65.0IP, 71H, 32ER, 18BB, 44K). Tonight, he'll be up against the International League strikeout leader, RHP Boof Bonser. Bonser was a winner on Sunday against Syracuse, throwing six inning of shutout baseball.

VS RED WINGS: The Bisons hold the slight 5-4 lead in their season-series against the Red Wings. The Herd won the first two series this year, but Rochester picked up a two-game sweep last week at Frontier Field. Eight of the nine games this year, and all of the last five, have been decided by three runs or less. Buffalo holds the slight lead in runs scored, 39-35.

HOME AGAIN: The Bisons are always happy to return to Dunn Tire Park. Buffalo holds the top home record in the International League at 33-15 (.688 winning percentage). That's three games better than the next best team (Norfolk, 28-16, .636).

REMEMBER ME?: Despite making 20 starts over the past two seasons, Jeremy Guthrie hasn't faced the Rochester Red Wings since 2003. On August 7, 2003, Guthrie allowed just one run while striking out six in five innings in a 6-3 Bisons' win. Guthrie also faced Rochester earlier that year and is 1-0 with a 3.27ERA in two career starts against the Red Wings.

SUPER JOE: Infielder Joe Inglett is just one hit away from tying the Bisons longest hitting streak of the year. Inglett is currently on a 10-game streak where he has hit .378 (14-37). Inglett is also averaging .392 (29-74) since June 8. Jeff Liefer has the Bisons longest streak of the season, an 11-game stretch from May 21-June 4 (.452, 19-42).

ROSTER MOVE: With an extra space on the roster, the Bisons called up catcher Clayton McCullough from Single-A Kinston. McCullough has played just two games with the Indians (0-5) and four games with the Double-A Akron Aeros (.091, 1-11, 1RBI) this season. In 2004, McCullough hit .206 (19-92) between Kinston and Single-A Lake County.
