TONIGHT'S GAME: The first of a three game series and the first of six meetings here. The third of 12 meetings, Braves are 0-2 vs. the Mud Hens. This is the third of 13 straight home games for the Braves (0-2). Richmond was 7-5 vs. Toledo last season, 4-2 at The Diamond. The Braves are 8-16 vs. the West Division, 3-7 at The Diamond. The Braves are fourth in the South, 18 games out of first. The Hens are first in the West, three games up on Columbus. Richmond has lost six straight games. It is the third time this season the Braves have dropped six or more in a row. They have also lost eight of their last nine. The Braves are 379-320 all-time vs. the Mud Hens who are the decendants of the Richmond Virginians.
LAST NIGHT'S GAME: The Columbus Clippers beat the Braves 12-5 Tuesday at The Diamond. The Clippers blew a close game open with an eight run eighth inning. The Braves committed three errors and walked 10. The Clippers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third on an RBI single by Melky Cabrera. Columbus made it 3-0 in the fourth on a Michael Vento home run and a run-scoring single by Andy Cannizaro. The Braves bounced back with two runs in the fourth on a mis-played Brayan Pena single. The Clippers sent 12 men up in the eighth and scored their eight runs on only three hits. Cabrera doubled three home and Vento smashed a three run homer. The Clippers added a run in the ninth. Richmond rallied in the home half on a three run double by John Barnes. Vento had three hits, including two home runs. Cabrera also had a four RBI night. Barnes, Brayan Pena, and Kerry Robinson had two hits for Richmond. Sean Henn earned the win. Anthony Lerew took the loss.
THE ROSTER: The active roster now stands at 24 (12 pitchers, two catchers, five infielders, and five outfielders with two players on the DL). The Braves have made 78 roster moves this season and lost 202 man-games to the disabled list. Nine Braves have earned big league call-ups this season and four are currently with Atlanta (Roman Colon, Kyle Davies, Kelly Johnson, and John Foster). The other five big league call-ups were Andy Marte, Frank Brooks, Matt Childers, Greisinger, and Brayan Pena. Nine Braves have been placed on the DL this season.
NUMEROLOGY: Richmond is in a stretch of 39 straight games vs. American League affiliates. Braves pitchers will not have to hit again in a game until Saturday. The Braves are 17-39 vs. American League affiliates. Andy Marte has a seven game hitting streak (9-22 .409). Brayan Pena has hits in five straight (6-18 .333). Kerry Robinson has hits in three straight (4-12 .333). John Barnes has hits in three straight (5-14 .357). James Jurries is 17 for his last 40 (.425). Bill McCarthy is 0 for his last 27. The Braves are last in the IL in batting average, runs, home runs, strikeouts, and walks issued. Esix Snead leads the IL in stolen bases. Recent R-Braves acquisition Kerry Robinson still leads the PCL in steals with 26. Braves starting pitchers have allowed three or fewer runs in four straight games and 15 of the last 20.
HAVE GLOVES WILL TRAVEL: Scott Pratt played first base in last night's game. He has now played every position other than catcher and pitcher this season. Pratt has started a game at six positions this season (SS, 2B, 3B, LF, CF, RF).
