Late Mallards Surge in Eighth Bests Bullfrogs
June 10, 2015 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Green Bay Rockers News Release
Green Bay, Wis.- The Bullfrogs had a lead until the bottom of the eighth inning as they dropped a heartbreaker to the Madison Mallards, 5-3. Sam Brunner suffered the loss, and Madison's Hector Bueno picked up the win in two-thirds of a shutout inning
It was a fast and furious start for the Bullfrogs in the top of the first. With Matt De La Rosa (Lenoir-Rhyne) and Ty Blankmeyer (St. John's) on base, Ryan Donovan (Hofstra) cranked a first-pitch home run to deep right-center field. It was his second of the season, and Green Bay took an early 3-0 lead.
But good pitching on both sides characterized the middle innings. Bullfrogs' third year starrer, Garrett Harrison (LHP/St. Cloud State) showed major league clubs his ability to work through tough situations, and went five innings, six hits, two runs, with six strikeouts.
Harrison now leads all Bullfrogs pitchers with 20 1/3 IP, 20 strikeouts, and three total starts.
After Luke VanLanen tallied three strikeouts in two perfect innings, Green Bay took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning. After new relief pitcher, Sam Brunner (Dayton) hit Jonathan Quintana (Barry) a dropped fly ball by Paul Jacobson (South Dakota State) in right field put runners on first and second.
A sac-bunt and intentional walk later, Scott Tyler (Ball State), doubled home two scores, including the go-ahead fourth run, and a Jean Ramirez hit served to right field gave Madison a 5-3 lead heading into the Bullfrogs final chance to score in the ninth inning.
A hit-by-pitch of Caleb Ratzman (Illinois State) and walk of Jack Strunc (Washington State), put two on the pond for the Bullfrogs with no outs. Matt De La Rosa's high chopping bunt toward third, almost a hit, placed Ratzman and Strunc in scoring position with just one out.
The Bullfrogs could not capitalize as the hard-throwing Vince Arobio (Southeastern C.C.) notched the save. Green Bay is now 1-2 at Madison's Warner Park on the year.
Luke Crabb starts tomorrow for the Bullfrogs at 7:05PM against the Madison Mallards.
