Late Goals Topple Bats

Austin Ice Bats News Release

(Hidalgo, TX) - It's been a tough stretch for the Central Hockey League's Austin Ice Bats, suffering from a six game losing streak. Their last win was on the road against the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees. Friday night the Ice Bats traveled to the Dodge Center to take on the Killer Bees for the second time this season, but it was too much offense by Rio Grande as they won 5-2.

The first period was back and forth between both teams. Although Rio Grande Valley led in the shot category, 24-8, both teams had quality scoring chances throughout the first. Taylor Raszka put the Ice Bats up 1-0 with his third goal of the year. Darryl McArthur and John Neal had assists on the play. Near the 5:00 mark, Jon Hedberg knotted the game back up for the Bees to make the score 1-1 heading into the first intermission.

In the second period tensions began to boil between both teams, as a number of words were exchanged after each stoppage in play to go along with pushing and shoving. Dennis Maxwell gave the Bees a 2-1 lead on a power play goal, 1:04 into the period. A few minutes later Jamie Thompson would tie things back up with a power play goal of his own. John Neal had the assist on the goal, it was Thompson's fifth of the year. Shortly before the period ended, Rio Grande would jump out to a 3-2 lead on a TJ Eason goal. That's how the second period would close.

The Ice Bats had chances to tie the game in the third period, but could not convert on a couple power plays. One of which was a 5-on-3 advantage. Rio Grande Valley weathered the storm, and then pulled away with two third period goals by Rob Voltera and Josh Bonar. The final score was 5-2.

The Ice Bats return home Saturday night, where they'll take on the Odessa Jackalopes at 7:35 PM at Chaparral Ice Arena. Tickets are still available for that game, call 927-7825 for more information.

The Ice Bats are the AA affiliate of the Minnesota Wild (NHL) and the Houston Aeros (AHL). The team is currently in their 12th season in Austin. For single game, group, and season ticket packages call (512) 927-7825, or visit icebats.com for more information.
