Youngstown SteelHounds News Release

SOUTHAVEN, MISSISSIPPI - Youngstown SteelHounds Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Kevin Kaminski announced today that the team has signed forward Jason Baird from the Corpus Christi Rayz. Baird was acquired in a trade that sends forward Chris Shaffer and future considerations to the Rayz.

Baird, 27, is a seven year professional from Cayuga, Ontario. The 6-1, 205-pound forward amassed 123 goals, 223 assists and 921 penalty minutes in 338 career games. After beginning his pro career in the ECHL with the Cincinnati Cyclones, he came to the Central Hockey League where he has played six seasons split between the Indianapolis Ice and the Corpus Christi Rayz.

During his time in South Texas he led the Rayz in both points and penalty minutes during the 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons. Baird has appeared in two CHL All Star Games during his tenure. He was named MVP of the 2004 contest and the Southern Conference Team MVP the following year. In his two games against Youngstown this season Baird has racked up 23 penalty minutes. In 10 games this season he has accumulated four points and 41 penalty minutes.

"This is a great move for us," said Kaminski. "Baird brings size, strength and scoring ability to this team. He has a very good hockey sense."

The Hounds will be without his services tonight when the Hounds take on the Mississippi RiverKings at 8:05. Baird will join his new team this Saturday when the Hounds take on the Texas Brahmas at 8:05. Both games are available on AM 600 WSOM and SteelHounds.com.
