Late Fresno Rally Sinks Ports in Series Finale

STOCKTON, Ca.- The Fresno Grizzlies scored six unanswered runs from the sixth inning on as the Ports dropped the series and homestand finale 8-3 in front of a season-high 4,501 fans at Banner Island Ballpark on Sunday evening.

Max Muncy got the Ports (26-49) off to a good start in the bottom of the first inning, hitting the first pitch he saw from Fresno starter Mason Green out of the ballpark to right center field for a solo home run to give Stockton a 1-0 lead.

The Ports added on with a clutch hit in the bottom of the second inning.

With Cooper Uhl on second base and two outs, Marcos Betancourt grounded a single through the right side to double the Ports' lead, making it 2-0.

After the Grizzlies (46-29) tied the game at two with single runs in the fourth and fifth, the Ports reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fifth. With runners on the corners and two outs, T.J. Schofield-Sam lined a single to center field, scoring Junior Perez from third to put the Ports back on top 3- 2.

After tying the game with a single run in the sixth, Fresno took the lead for good with a four-run eighth. Ben Sems started the frame with a one-out single through the right side and reached third when EJ Andrews, Jr. doubled off the left field wall to put runners on second and third. Yorvis Torrealba then singled through the right side to score Sems from third base and give the Grizzlies their first lead of the game at 4 -3. After a walk loaded the bases and wild pitch forced in another run, Adael Amador doubled down the right field line to extend the Fresno advantage to 7-3.

The Grizzlies tallied another in the top of the ninth on another RBI single by Torreabla to make it 8- 3, and the Ports were retired 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth to end the ballgame.

Cullen Kafka (3-1) got the win for the Grizzlies firing four innings of relief with six strikeouts, while Robin Vazquez (0-2) took the loss for Stockton allowing four runs on four hits in two innings.

After a six-game series in Modesto beginning on Monday, the Ports return to Banner Island Ballpark on Tuesday, July 12 to start a six-game series against the Inland Empire 66ers. Tickets are available at stocktonports.com or by calling (209) 644-1900.
