July 4, 2022 - California League (CalL)
San Jose Giants News Release

The San Jose Giants closed out their homestead on Sunday night with an 8-5 loss to the Modesto Nuts in front of an Independence Day Weekend sellout crowd of 3,162 at Excite Ballpark. The Nuts scored eight runs over the first two innings and held off the Giants late to secure the series victory. With the loss, San Jose (45-30, 5-4 second half) dropped four of six games to Modesto this week.

Both teams scored twice in the first inning on Sunday before the Nuts erupted for a six-run top of the second to take early control of the game. Jonatan Clase led off the contest with a home run to deep right center off of Giants starter Manuel Mercedes to give Modesto a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Edwin Arroyo singled, stole second, advanced to third on a fly out and scored on a wild pitch.

A pair of Nuts errors then led to two San Jose runs in the bottom of the first as the Giants immediately tied the game. Aeverson Arteaga drew a leadoff walk before he was forced out at second on Carter Williams' fielder's choice grounder. Victor Bericoto then hit a grounder up the middle that was misplayed by second baseman Amador Arias for an error. A wild pitch moved the runners to second and third with two outs and then Anyesber Sivira's grounder skipped through the legs of Modesto third baseman Ben Ramirez for another error. The second miscue of the inning allowed both Williams and Bericoto to score tying the game 2-2.

The Nuts though responded by scoring six runs on four hits in the top of the second to knock out Mercedes. David Sheaffer was hit by a pitch to leadoff before Milkar Perez walked. A wild pitch advanced the runners and then Colin Davis hit a sacrifice fly to give Modesto back the lead at 3-2. Arias followed with a ringing RBI double to deep left for a 4-2 Nuts advantage. After Clase grounded out, Arroyo produced an RBI single to make it 5-2. Freuddy Batista was up next and he singled before Ramirez stepped to the plate and launched a towering three-run home run to deep right center. The round-tripper was Ramirez's ninth of the season as it stretched the Modesto lead to 8-2 and chased Mercedes.

The Nuts then wouldn't score for the remainder of the night as the Giants bullpen quartet of Jose Cruz, Jorge Guzman, Ben Madison and Tyler Myrick combined to throw 7 1/3 shutout innings with only two hits allowed and 11 strikeouts.

The six-run deficit though was too much for San Jose to overcome. The Giants scored once in the bottom of the fourth when Alexander Suarez led off with a double and eventually scored on a Williams RBI groundout to make it 8-3.

San Jose was set down 1-2-3 in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings by Modesto pitching before plating two runs in the bottom of the eighth. With one out, Sivira was hit by a pitch before a two-out single from Garrett Frechette. Ronaldo Flores then hit a slow roller along the third base line that saw the catcher Batista airmail the throw to first. The play was ruled a single for Flores with Sivira coming home thanks to the throwing error. Suarez was up next and his fly ball into left center fell in-between two Nuts outfielders due to a miscommunication. Suarez was credited with an RBI double as Frechette scored bringing the Giants within 8-5. Following the hit, San Jose brought the potential tying run to the plate, however Arteaga was retired on a fly out to left to end the inning.

In the bottom of the ninth, Riley Mahan singled with two outs, but Sivira then struck out as the Nuts sealed their series finale victory.
