Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Clark Murphy and Casey McElroy hit solo home runs in the eighth inning to lift the TinCaps to a 5-4 come-from-behind win over the West Michigan Whitecaps at Parkview Field on Tuesday afternoon. The TinCaps won three of four from the Whitecaps and were victorious in four of their seven games on the homestand.
Fort Wayne (18-21) scored in the first inning against West Michigan (18-21) starter Kyle Ryan. Donavan Tate and Tyler Stubblefield began the bottom half of the frame with back-to-back singles and executed a double steal to advance to second and third, respectively. Mike Gallic plated Tate on a sacrifice fly to put Fort Wayne in front 1-0.
In the top of the second, West Michigan's Dean Green led off with a double and eventually came around to score on a sacrifice fly, tying the game at 1. The Whitecaps scored again in the third inning, pushing runs across on a solo home run from Jason Krizan, and an RBI double by Eugenio Suarez.
Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the third, the TinCaps answered with two runs of their own. Donavan Tate plated Lee Orr, who had led off with a double, and Tate later scored on a groundout by Casey McElroy.
Fort Wayne starter Colin Rea pitched four innings in his second start of the year, surrendering three earned runs, walking one and striking out one.
The game remained tied at 3 into the sixth inning, when Brandon Loy led off against TinCaps reliever Ruben Mejia. Loy hit a home run to left field, giving the Whitecaps a 4-3 edge.
In the eighth, however, Fort Wayne received a burst of power as Clark Murphy and Casey McElroy hit home runs to right field off of Melvin Mercedes (0-1), turning a 4-3 deficit into a 5-4 lead. It was the fourth multi-homer effort of the year for the TinCaps, and the third such game this month.
Matt Stites earned his third save of the year, pitching the final two outs of the game, after Daniel Cropper (2-0) went one and one third innings.
The TinCaps hit the road for Lansing, Michigan on Wednesday. The first place Lugnuts host the TinCaps in a 7:05 game that features Matt Wisler taking the hill for Fort Wayne and Jesse Hernandez on the hill for Lansing. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 1380 ESPN and ESPNFortWayne.com.
