Great Lakes Loons News Release
EASTLAKE, OH - The Great Lakes Loons losing skid has reached five straight after losing a 4-1 decision Tuesday to the Lake County Captains. The Loons' offense managed just three hits, and for the second straight game did not score until the ninth inning.
Cole Anderson and Gustavo Gomez battled in a pitchers' duel with neither pitcher allowing a run through the first five innings.
The Captains snapped a scoreless tie with two sixth inning runs. Alex Monsalve singled to right-center to score Jarrud Sabourin. On the play, second baseman Kevin Taylor tried to throw out Monsalve rounding first base and threw errantly allowing Francisco Lindor to score. Both runs were earned. Gomez left with two outs in the sixth and Matt Shelton entered to record the final out.
The Captains tallied two more in the seventh, capitalizing on two Loons errors and putting together three straight hits.
The Loons did not score until the ninth inning, when Joe Winker drilled a Cole Cook offering deep over the right field wall for his fourth home run of the season.
Gomez (4-2) picked up the loss, allowing two hits, two walks and two hit batsmen in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out five and was charged with two earned runs. At one point, Gomez retired 14 straight batters.
Shelton allowed two unearned runs in one full inning. Yimi Garcia did not allow a run in 1 1/3 innings.
Anderson (4-1) picked up the win with six shutout innings, allowing just two hits. Cook worked the final three frames for his second save.
The Loons were swept for the first time since the season-opening series at Lansing, May 6-7.
The Loons (20-19) start up a quick three-game homestand Wednesday evening at Dow Diamond against the Detroit Tigers' affiliate, the West Michigan Whitecaps. Game time is 7:05pm. Right-hander Arismendy Ozoria (3-0, 3.67) is scheduled to start for the Loons against Whitecaps righty Brennan Smith (1-2, 2.59). Tickets are available at Loons.com or 989-837-BALL. Lou E. Loon is celebrating his birthday during the game and all of his friends are invited to attend.
The Great Lakes Loons are a sixth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and are in the middle of their 5th Anniversary Celebration, which kicked off in August 2011 and will continue throughout the 2012 season. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
