Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - Tsung-Che Cheng launched his first home run of the season on Tuesday night, but a five-run seventh inning for the Bowie Baysox served Altoona its fifth loss of the season, 10-4, at Prince George's Stadium.
Cheng's two-run shot in the top of the seventh inning off Baysox reliever Kyle Virbitsky tied the game 4-4 after Altoona fell behind 4-0 early in the game. He finished the night 3-for-3 with two singles and a walk. The Baysox responded in the bottom of the frame with five runs to put the game out of reach.
Samuel Basallo opened the inning with a solo home run on the first pitch of the frame from Grant Ford. Ford would allow two more base runners before Brad Case entered and allowed an RBI-single to Frederick Bencosme and a two-run home run to TT Bowens. Ford had retired five batters in relief before allowing the Basallo home run and allowed three runs on two hits in 1.2 innings of relief with two strikeouts. Case would allow another run in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly, finishing with three runs allowed on four hits in 2.0 innings of relief.
Po-Yu Chen started the game for Altoona, allowing four runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings. Chen allowed a solo home run to Dylan Beavers in the bottom of the first inning before allowing a two-run triple to Bencosme and an RBI-single to Bowens in the third.
The Curve got on the board with a Jase Bowen RBI-single in the fourth, scoring Cheng who reached on a bunt single. They added a run on an Abrahan Gutierrez RBI-groundout in the fifth, but Altoona left the bases loaded in each frame, finishing the game with eight runners left on base.
The Baysox had Baltimore Orioles Major Leage rehabbing RHP Kyle Bradish start the contest, allowing just one hit over 3.0 scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Bowie used five pitchers in the contest, with 2021 Altoona Curve Pitcher-of-the-Year and Johnstown, PA native LHP Trey McGough tossing two scoreless innings with a strikeout.
Altoona continues its six-game series with Bowie Wednesday morning at 11:05 a.m. RHP Seth Johnson will take the mound for the Baysox with Altoona's starter TBD.
