Reading Fightin Phils News Release
(Binghamton, NY) - The Reading Fightin Phils (3-7) fell to the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (4-5), 3-2 in the series opener in Binghamton on Tuesday night. This is Reading's fifth loss in a row after losing the series to Portland on Sunday.
Konnor Ash (L, 0-1) started his first game of the season for the Fightins, and pitched well, despite the loss. He pitched three innings, gave up two runs, and four hits, and struck out four with a 3.38 ERA.
The Rumble Ponies got on the board first, in the second inning. First-baseman JT Swartz and Jeremiah Jackson hit back-to-back singles, putting runners on first and second. Right fielder Matt Rudick followed with an RBI double to right field, scoring two runs, and giving Binghamton an early 2-0 lead.
Reading did not earn a hit until the fifth inning, thanks to Binghamton pitchers, Max Kranick, Trey McLoughlin, and Blade Tidwell (W, 1-1) who pitched a combined 7.1 innings, and struck out 17 Reading batters. The Fightins finally got the offense rolling in the fifth with a single by Kendall Simmons. Robert Moore followed with a double and Simmons went to third. Marcus Lee Sang earned an RBI after hitting a sacrifice fly to left field, allowing Simmons to score, cutting the Rumble Ponies lead to just one run, 2-1.
Binghamton earned a run back in the sixth with three back-to-back singles from Jose Peroza, Jett Williams, and Rhylan Thomas. Thomas' single allowed Williams to score, increasing their lead 3-1.
In the eighth, Reading scored one more run off the bat of Carlos De La Cruz, who hit another sacrifice fly hit to deep left field. Gabriel Rincones Jr. came in to score after leading off the inning with a walk and a stolen base.
Binghamton hung on to their 3-2 lead in the ninth, as Wilkin Ramos earned his third save, securing the victory.
