Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Montgomery Biscuits first baseman Nate Lowe hit a go-ahead, two-run double in the sixth inning of a 3-1 win and sixth straight victory over the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp in front of a sellout crowd of 11,762 - the largest in more than 10 years at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville - at the Independence Day Eve Celebration presented by the Nimnicht Family of Dealerships.
In front of the fourth-largest Southern League crowd in the 15-year history of the ballpark and the largest since 11,837 attended on April 18, 2008, the Jumbo Shrimp's Independence Day Eve included a pregame Stahl-Meyer All-American Eating Contest, a patriotic Jumbo Shrimp cap giveaway and the postgame fireworks.
The Jumbo Shrimp (3-9 second half, 31-49 overall) took the lead in the bottom of the third inning against Montgomery left-hander Matt Krook. Right fielder John Norwood doubled down the third-base line, went to third base on catcher Rodrigo Vigil's sacrifice and scored on third baseman Brian Schales' RBI single. Serving as his team's opener, Krook allowed three hits and no walks with five strikeouts the first three innings. Right hander J.D. Martin (5-9), normally a starter, pitched five innings in his first relief outing of the season, scattering four hits with no walks and seven strikeouts. Right-hander Yoel Espinal pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn his second save for Montgomery (8-4, 45-37).
Jacksonville right-hander Jeff Brigham (3-1) held the 1-0 lead until the fifth inning, when Biscuits right fielder Nathan Lukes hit a one-out single, catcher Mac James hit a two-out infield single, and designated hitter David Rodriguez hit a game-tying RBI single. In the sixth inning, Biscuits shortstop Jake Cronenworth hit a one-out single, Brigham hit second baseman Nick Solak with a pitch, and Lowe hit a two-run double to right-center field. Brigham allowed a season-high three earned runs on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts in four innings. Left-hander Miguel Del Pozo pitched two scoreless innings, and left-hander Dylan Lee pitched a perfect ninth inning.
UP NEXT: The Jumbo Shrimp will open a series in Mobile at 7:35 p.m. Wednesday. Jacksonville returns home to begin a nine-game homestand with the opener of a four-game series against Chattanooga at 6:05 p.m. Sunday. Gates open at 5 p.m., when families can play catch on the field, followed by player autographs as part of Baptist Health Sunday Family FUNday presented by Wolfson Children's Hospital Rehab. Kids activities will be in the Wolfson Children's Hospital Kids Zone, and following the game, kids 12 and under can run the bases. Star Wars Night presented by Bowden Eye includes face painting, balloon animals, and the chance to meet Star Wars characters in person, thanks to the 501st Legion and WasabiCon. The game is presented by Easy 102.9.
