Mississippi Braves News Release
PENSACOLA, FL -- The Mississippi Braves split a doubleheader with the Pensacola Blue Wahoos on Monday night at Blue Wahoos Stadium, dropping game one 3-0 and winning the nightcap 6-3. Enderson Franco and Kyle Wright posted quality starts in the twin bill.
The win in game two of Monday's doubleheader snapped Mississippi's six-game losing streak and was the first victory since Sunday, June 24. The win subsequently ended Pensacola's season-long eight-game winning streak and was their first loss since Friday, June 22.
The Blue Wahoos (8-3, 38-41) struck first in game one during the bottom of the second inning. Mitch Nay opened the frame by drawing a walk from M-Braves starter Enderson Franco (L, 2-6). The next batter, Luis Gonzalez, smacked a two-run home run to left and it was 2-0 Pensacola.
The M-Braves (4-7, 33-48) threatened in each of the first four innings but left runners on base in each frame. Pensacola tacked on an additional run in the fourth inning on a solo home run by Mitch Nay, his second of the series.
Franco was credited with a complete game and pitched 6.0 innings of three-run baseball, walking just two and striking out five. Franco threw 91 pitches. Blue Wahoos starter Vladimir Gutierrez (W, 5-8) tossed 6.0 shutout innings for the win.
Pensacola jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the nightcap - scoring a run in the bottom of the first inning against M-Braves starter Kyle Wright (W, 5-7) on an RBI single by Shed Long.
Brandon Downes put the M-Braves on top in the top of the second inning with a two-run home run to left, his second for Mississippi and it was 2-1. The Braves added to their lead with two outs in the third inning. Travis Demeritte blasted a two-run shot to the opposite field after a walk to Tyler Marlette and it was 4-1 M-Braves. Demeritte's long ball was his second in five games and eighth on the year.
Mississippi ran Pensacola game two starter Victor Payano (L, 0-2) from the game when Luis Valenzuela followed the Demeritte homer with a single. Valenzuela scored on the Braves' third straight hit, a single from Downes and throwing error by Pensacola right fielder Aristides Aquino. Daniel Lockhart capped off the inning with a fourth-straight hit, a single off of Rafael De Paula scoring Downes and the Braves led 6-1.
Wright surrendered two runs in the third inning but turned in his seventh quality start of the season and retired nine of ten batters at one point, from the third through the sixth inning. The 2017 first round pick struck out five and walked two over 6.0 innings, scattering seven hits and three runs in his team-leading 17th start of the season. Wright now ranks second in the league with 88.1 innings pitched. M-Braves starting pitchers have now logged 13 quality starts over the past 19 games with a 2.37 ERA.
Chad Sobotka (S, 1) struck out two in the bottom of the seventh and registered his first save of the year, securing a 6-3 victory.
The M-Braves and Blue Wahoos will wrap up the six-game series at Blue Wahoos Stadium on Tuesday night. In a rematch of game one, RHP Bryse Wilson (1-5, 6.25) will take the mound for the Braves against RHP Daniel Wright (3-5, 4.23) for Pensacola.
