Birmingham Barons News Release
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - In a series that had been dominated by strong pitching, the Birmingham Barons (39-41) found themselves on the wrong end of a pitcher's duel on Tuesday night, falling 3-0 to the Jackson Generals (44-37) in front of a sellout crowd of 8,506 at Regions Field. The six-game series finishes split at three games apiece, with three games resulting in shutouts.
Turning Point: With their best offensive opportunity of the night, the Barons put runners on second and third with one out in the third against Jackson starter Joel Payamps (W, 7-2). However, the runners wouldn't advance as Joel Booker and Luis Basabe struck out to end the inning.
Moments That Mattered: After being shut out on Monday, the Generals were quick to plate the game's first run tonight as Marty Herum's two-out infield single plated Jamie Westbrook, and that would prove to be the winning run. In the second, two more two-out runs scored on a single from Westbrook to increase the lead to 3-0, capping the scoring on the night.
Facts And Figures: Payamps was dominant on the mound for the Generals from his first pitch to his last. Over 5.1 innings, he gave up just two hits while recording 14 of his 17 outs with strikeouts to get his second win of the series. In relief, Wei-Chieh Huang (S, 1) tossed 3.1 clean innings to earn the save.
By The Numbers: For Birmingham, starter Alec Hansen (L, 0-3) was wild early, walking six batters over his 4.0 innings on the mound while giving up three runs on just two hits. In relief, Jake Johansen, Brian Clark, and Brandon Brennan combined to keep the Generals bats silent, but the Birmingham offense was never able to mount a comeback.
Up Next: The Barons head to Chattanooga to begin a four-game series with the Lookouts. Jimmy Lambert (1-0, 1.50) is set to start for the Barons against Chattanooga's Sean Poppin (1-4, 5.46). First pitch on Independence Day from AT&T Field is set for 5:15 p.m. Curt Bloom will have the call on 960 WERC News Radio and the iHeart Radio app.
