Knoxville Smokies News Release
SEVIERVILLE, TN - Tennessee defeated Chattanooga 5-4 in walk-off fashion on Monday night in 10 innings thanks to an RBI single from Zach Short.
Matt Swarmer started the game for the Smokies and pitched three innings, allowing no runs on two hits. Unfortunately for Swarmer, a rain delay occurred in the bottom of the third, forcing him out of the game.
The Smokies got on the board first in the bottom of the second when Ian Rice doubled with one out in the inning and, after a wild pitch moved Rice to third, Eddy Martinez singled him home.
Preston Morrison replaced Swarmer after the delay and picked up where he left off. Morrison pitched four innings, allowing one run on four hits and striking out two. Jordan Minch replaced Morrison in the eighth inning and gave up a two-run home run that put the Lookouts up 3-1.
Tennessee immediately rallied back after the home run in the bottom of the eighth. Back-to-back doubles by Connor Myers and Charcer Burks opened up the inning and the bases were loaded with no one out when Jeffrey Baez walked. Zack Short cut the Lookouts lead to 3-2 as the next batter when he singled in Myers. Yasiel Balaguert was the next batter and, although he grounded into a double play, Burks scored to tie the game up.
Wyatt Short pitched the 10thinning for the Smokies and gave up a run to give Chattanooga the lead. Tennessee answered back in the bottom of the inning. Burks doubled in Hodges, who started the inning on first, and Short came through with two outs to score Burks and win the game.
The Smokies and Lookouts will finish out their six-game series on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Thomas Hatch will be on the mound for the Smokies as he looks for his seventh win of the season. The Lookouts will counter with Omar Bencomo, who had a no decision in game one of the series for Chattanooga.
