Laredo Takes Series Opener from Pheasants

SIOUX FALLS -- The Laredo Lemurs were firing on all cylinders, and the Sioux Falls Pheasants couldn't complete a comeback in a 9-5 defeat on Tuesday night.

The Lemurs started off fast with hot bats. The first four Lemur batters reached base in a three-run first inning. Palmer Karr Jr. started the scoring with an RBI single, John Allen added an RBI double, and Uriak Marquez's sacrifice fly finished the frame.

After back-to-back singles off Pheasants starter Barry Fowler (1-2), an error by Cory Morales allowed a run to score. A second run plated on a double play for a 5-0 advantage.

The Pheasants defensive woes continued in the fourth inning. Back-to-back errors by Jake Taylor led to two unearned runs on a wild pitch and Karr's RBI double for a 7-0 lead.

Meanwhile, Laredo starter Matt Way (8-6) kept Sioux Falls quiet early on, not allowing a hit until the fifth inning and seeing just one over the minimum.

The Pheasants' offense finally awoke when Cristian Guerrero slapped a single to break up the no-hitter, and Trevor Lawhorn added a double to plate the first Pheasants run.

"A lot of times I think that it has to do with it being the second time through the lineup," said Pheasants manager Steve Shirley of the no-hit bid. "He was pretty dominant early, and when we saw him for the second time the guys made adjustments."

In the sixth, the Pheasants roughed up Way even more. Reggie Abercrombie's single brought one home, before Trevor Lawhorn's bases-loaded, two-out double scored three runs, cutting the lead to 7-5. He finished the night 2-for-4 with four RBI.

Fowler cooled down after the rough beginning, not allowing an earned run after the second inning. He hurled 6 2/3 innings yielding seven runs, four earned, on 11 hits. He struck out two and walked one in the loss.

"I thought Barry had good stuff out there.," said Shirley. "They rolled a couple through and the errors didn't help, but I thought Barry threw the ball pretty well."

Way was forced to exit in the seventh inning. He threw 6 2/3 innings and gave up five runs on six hits, while striking out eight and walking two in the victory.

The Pheasants had scoring chances against the Laredo bullpen, but they left a pair of runner on in each of the seventh and eighth inning.

Laredo added cushion to their lead in the ninth inning. Karr Jr. hit a leadoff home run, and Javier Brito's double extended the lead to 9-5. Karr led all hitters, going 3-for-5 with three RBI.

Mike Benacka entered in the eighth inning for Laredo and earned the save. He tossed the final 1 1/3 innings and struck out four.

Game two of the three game series against Laredo is on Wednesday, August 15 at 7:05 p.m. at Sioux Falls Stadium. Wednesday night is Ladies Night, as all ladies will get in for only $5. "Kids FREE" also continues. Two children 12-and-under are free with the purchase of an adult ticket ($12 seating) thanks to Sanford Children's.
