Lansing's Pillar Has Career Night in 16-4 Win over Dragons

Dayton, Ohio- Kevin Pillar hit a grand slam home run and became the first Midwest League player in nine years to collect six hits in a game to lift the Lansing Lugnuts to a 16-4 victory over the Dayton Dragons on Saturday night. A crowd of 8,793 saw the game at Fifth Third Field.

Pillar drove in six runs to lead an 18-hit Lugnuts attack. He entered the ninth inning with a 5 for 5 game going, and then blasted a grand slam in his final at-bat to top off the night. His six hits tied the league record.

Carlos Perez hit a three-run home run in the first inning and Chris Hawkins added a two-run triple in the second for Lansing. The first place Lugnuts improved their record to 24-11 on the season as they dropped the Dragons to 14-22.

Lansing built a 12-2 lead over the first four innings as Dragons starting pitcher Daniel Tuttle (1-2) had a rough night. Tuttle allowed three runs in the first inning and three more in the second before being lifted with no one out in the second inning. His final line included one inning, four hits, six earned runs, with three walks and one strikeout as he absorbed the loss. Jimmy Moran replaced Tuttle and worked out of a jam in the second but allowed one run in the third and five more in the fourth inning.

Dayton designated hitter Joe Terry belted a home run in the bottom of the second inning in his first at-bat with the club. Terry became the first Dayton player to homer in his first at-bat since Tommy Nurre in 2010.

The Dragons finished with 13 hits, their most in a game since they had a season-high 15 vs. Quad Cities on April 20. Juan Perez had three hits including two doubles for the Dragons. Ryan Wright also had three hits. Terry and Yovan Gonzalez had two hits.

The Dragons host the Lugnuts again on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field (WONE 980 AM Radio). Centerville native Dan Jensen (1-2, 1.35) will start for Dayton against Lansing's David Rollins (2-0, 2.30). The series continues Monday and Tuesday with both games at 7:00 p.m.
