Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Fort Wayne TinCaps scored eight runs over the first four innings on Saturday evening en route to a 12-4 victory over the West Michigan Whitecaps at Parkview Field. Travis Whitmore collected four hits, Duanel Jones and Tyler Stubblefield each hit a home run, while Austin Hedges ad Clark Murphy each knocked in three runs during the series-opening win.

Fort Wayne (16-20) pounced on West Michigan (17-19) starter Wilsen Palacios in a four-run first inning. Whitmore sent Stubblefield home on an RBI single, Mike Gallic followed two batters later with an RBI single of his own, and Murphy picked up a two-run single to score both Whitmore and Gallic.

In the second against Palacios (2-3), TinCaps shortstop Tyler Stubblefield, in just his second game with the club this season, hit a home run off the metal railing atop the fence in left center field, giving Fort Wayne a 5-0 advantage. Murphy once again came through with a run-scoring single in the third, stretching the lead to 6-0. Palacios' night ended after three innings. He allowed six runs, five earned, while striking out three and walking one in the losing effort.

Cody Hebner (5-1) surrendered one run in the fourth, as Steven Moya reach on an error and came in to score on a sacrifice fly from Jason King. The run was unearned. Hebner received more run support in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run homer from Duanel Jones, making the score 8-1. It was the first home run of the year for the third baseman.

Hebner allowed three runs in the fifth inning, as the Whitecaps sent seven men to the plate and three of the first four batters to the plate reached on doubles. At the end of five innings, Fort Wayne led 8-4. Hebner's five innings qualified him to pick up the win, as he allowed four runs, three earned, on six hits, while walking three and striking out two.

Hedges cleared the bases in the sixth with a two-out, three-run double and the last TinCaps run came home on a Whitmore RBI single in the seventh, to make the final margin 12-4. The 12 runs match a season high for Fort Wayne.

James Needy pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the TinCaps, as did Yordany Ramirez, who made his 2012 Fort Wayne debut. Yordany played in Fort Wayne in 2005 as an outfielder, and began his conversion to pitching two seasons ago in the Houston Astros farm system.

The second game of this four-game series is scheduled to take place at 3:05 PM on Sunday afternoon. The scheduled starters are lefty Frank Garces for Fort Wayne and righthander Marcelo Carreno for West Michigan.
