
Kernels fall short in Burlington slugfest, 12-8

BURLINGTON, Iowa - Cedar Rapids held an early 6-0 lead, but the Burlington Bees slugged their way past the Kernels 12-8 at Community Field on Friday evening. 16 of the game's 20 runs were recorded via a home run as the two teams combined for 7 long balls.
The Kernels scored first for the fourth straight game when Gary Mitchell got the scoring barrage started in the 2nd inning with his first of two home runs on the night. Mitchell's 2-run homer went to left field and gave the Kernels a 2-0 lead.
Kaleb Cowart followed with a solo home run to right field in the 3rd inning, pushing the Kernels lead to 3-0.
In the 4th inning, Mitchell launched his second home run of the night. This blast knocked off the scoreboard in right-center. It was also a 2-run shot and gave the Kernels a 5-0 advantage. Later in the inning, Trevor Hairgrove's RBI sacrifice fly plated Abel Baker and gave the Kernels a 6-0 cushion.
Burlington scored five times in the bottom of the 4th inning to cut the Kernels lead to 6-5. Kernels starter Mike Johnson walked Sean Jamieson to lead off the inning. Jamieson was retired at 2nd base on Chih-Fang Pan's fielder's choice groundout. With a runner at 1st base and one out, the Bees recorded their first hit of the night. It was B.A. Vollmuth's 2-run home run to left field, cutting the Kernels lead to three runs. Dusty Robinson then doubled and Nick Rickles followed with a single before Douglas Landaeta's 3-run blast over the wall in left cut the Kernels lead to one run.
Mike Johnson went 3.1 innings and allowed five runs on four hits while striking out two and walking three.
The Bees scored five more runs in the 5th inning to take a four run lead. With Kernels reliever Joe Melioris on the hill, Aaron Shipman led off with a double and Jamieson drew a base on balls. After a popout, Vollmuth drove home Shipman with a RBI double to tie the game 6-6. Robinson was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Rickles then cleared the bases with a grand slam home run to left field, giving the Bees a 10-6 lead.
Melioris (3-1) took the loss for the Kernels on the mound. He allowed five runs on four hits over 1.2 innings. He struck out one and walked one.
The Kernels plated two runs in the 6th inning on Abel Baker's 2-RBI double, cutting the Bees lead to 10-8.
The Bees added two runs on Royce Consigli's 2-run homer to right field in the 7th inning, pushing their lead to 12-8. It was Burlington's fourth homer of the night, and the game's seventh and final home run.
Frank De Jiulio pitched two innings in relief for the Kernels, allowing two runs on two hits while striking out two and walking two. Stephen Tromblee pitched one scoreless inning while striking out one.
Brent Powers (3-2) got the win for Burlington in relief. He went four innings and allowed two runs on one hit while striking out four and walking two. Jose Macias started for the Bees and went four innings, allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits. Nate Kilcrease pitched one scoreless inning.
The Kernels now begin a four game series at Modern Woodmen Park in Davenport vs. the Quad Cities River Bandits. Game time on Saturday night is 7:00 p.m.
