Quad City Mallards News Release
Moline, IL â Rookie forward Lanny Gare, who was called up to the American Hockey League's Hershey Bears on Dec. 15, has rejoined the Mallards after being assigned by Hershey, a Quad City affiliate. Mallards President/General Manager Howard Cornfield made the announcement today. Gare is expected in uniform when the Mallards play at Fort Wayne tonight.
With Hershey, Gare set up the game-winning overtime goal in his first game on Dec. 19. It turned out to be his only point in nine games with the Bears. He had nine shots on goal and six penalty minutes.
In his first stint with the Mallards, Gare scored 11 points, on three goals and eight assists, in 16 games. Two of his three goals were game-winners. He had 33 shots on goal along with a +3 plus/minus rating. A 25-year-old native of Vernon, British Columbia, Gare began the season in rookie camp with the National Hockey League's Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. He then participated in training camp with Hershey.
Gare was a finalist for the 2003 Hobey Baker Award, given to the top collegiate player in the U.S. each year. He was named second team All-America following his senior season at University of New Hampshire, where he helped lead the Wildcats to a second straight appearance in the NCAA Frozen Four. He was named as the Wildcats' top offensive player, as well as being selected the top defensive forward for the second straight year.
Gare is a nephew of former NHL star Danny Gare. Danny played 13 seasons, scoring 354 goals for Buffalo, Detroit, and Edmonton. He scored 50 goals for the Sabres in 1975-76 and 56 goals for Buffalo in 1979-80.
