Lancers Remain Undefeated against the Fargo Force in an Overtime Thriller

FARGO, ND. - Coming into the second game of the weekend, the Lancers were hungry for a win. Not just to cap off their second sweep over the Fargo Force in three weeks, but to stay competitive with the teams at the top of the western conference standings.

The Force were looking to improve their special teams as a whole and come out hard in attempt to snap their 5-game losing streak, which dates back to October 22nd when they started their first series with Omaha at Ralston Arena.

The first period of play was one of the most evenly matched of the season. Resulting in scoring chances for both teams and a 9-8 shot count in favor of the Lancers.

Despite it being well-played by both squads, the Force was able to strike first, 14:33 into the period. Mason Langenbrunner picked up possession of the puck on the near side boards and fed it to his defensive partner, Trevor Griebel. Griebel ripped a shot through traffic, which tipped off the stick of Fargo point leader, Cole Knuble, sneaking the puck past the glove hand of Omaha goaltender, Mason Kucenski to take the 1-0 lead which they carried into the first intermission.

Trailing after the first 20 minutes is something the Lancers are used to, which usually sets them up for a successful second period of play.

In this case, it took nearly 10 minutes into the second period for Omaha to knot the game at one goal a side. Alex Bump got a puck past Fargo goaltender, Anton Castro on a shot through traffic off a feed from Andrew Centrella, picking up the first power-play goal of the evening.

It took Fargo just 11 seconds to regain the one goal lead as captain Tyler Rollwagen snuck an odd angle shot between the short-side post and Kucenski's blocker, to pull ahead 2-1 with 9:58 remaining in the second period.

Just two and a half minutes later, Hunter McDonald tickled the twine on the power-play off passes from Centrella and Bump to tie it up 2-2, which is the score both teams took to the second intermission. This goal gave both Bump and Centrella multi-point nights, but Bump wasn't quite done yet.

The third period unleashed a massive offensive burst from both teams early on, resulting in four total goals in the first seven minutes of play. And here is how it all panned out:

It all started 3:41 into the period as Owen Fowler netted his long awaited first goal of the season as he was able to finish the job on a shot from Garrett Wright, off a pass from Matt Basgall. This gave Omaha their third and final power-play goal of the night.

Just 48 seconds later, following an interference penalty issued to Lancers forward, Tanner Rowe, Andre Gasseau scored his sixth goal of the year off a nice play setup by Griebel and Bret Link. To retie the game 3-3.

Then, following the trend of this game, Michael Cameron got a puck by Castro 11 seconds later off a nice play setup by Fowler and Basgall to take the 4-3 lead with 15:19 remaining in regulation.

That goal gave Cameron his fourth of the season, and allowed Fowler and Basgall to join Bump and Centrella on having multi-point nights for the Lancers.

But, you guessed it, that lead did not last long. 2:09 later, Felikss Gavars netted the Force's second power-play goal of the night on a nice backdoor tap in off a shot from Jakob Stender to tie the game, 4-4 with 13:10 left in regulation.

The final 13:10 of regulation was intense, but resulted in no goals on the board. Sending this game in to overtime tied a four goals apiece.

After Fargo took the opening face-off to start the 3-on-3 overtime play, they quickly moved into the attacking zone, but ended up turning the puck over.

The puck found the stick of Bump, who carried the puck end-to-end, saw Cameron in the slot, and hit him with a crisp pass. Cameron took time to cradle the puck, and flicked a wrist shot right over the blocker of Castro to take the 5-4 overtime win for Omaha.

That overtime goal gave Cameron his fifth goal of the season, and his second goal of the night.

This matchup managed to give five Lancers multiple points on the evening:

Alex Bump: 1G, 2A = 3 Points

Andrew Centrella: 2A = 2 Points

Owen Fowler: 1G, 1A = 2 Points

Matt Basgall: 2A = 2 Points

Michael Cameron: 2G = 2 Points

This win improves Omaha's record to 6-4-2-0 and drops Fargo's record to 3-5-2-1 on the year.

The Lancers will be back in action for Military Appreciation Night at Ralston Arena on Friday, November 12th for a 7:05 P.M. puck drop against the Sioux Falls Stampede. That game can be caught on MixLR and HockeyTV.
