Caps Rally in 3rd to Force OT, Secure Victory in Shootout
November 7, 2021 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Madison Capitols News Release
With 12:41 left in the 3rd period, the Capitols found themselves trailing 2-0 to the Green Bay Gamblers. Being the resilient squad that they are, the Capitols would not go down without a fight.
A little under two minutes later, in what could be considered a perfectly executed play, Daniel Sambuco buried the Caps first goal of the game with 11:05 left in regulation. Madison won a defensive zone draw, broke the puck out of their zone and moved it up ice quickly. Nick Wallace then fired a shot from the high slot that produced a juicy rebound for Sambuco to fire home. Brendan Lamb registered the secondary assist. 3:53 later, the Capitols would equalize the game at 2 apiece off of a Brendan Lamb tip-in from the slot. Captain Jack Horbach who had just exited the penalty box, perfectly slid the puck on net for Lamb to get a stick on it to put it home for his first career USHL goal. Michigan commit and Capitols forward Tyler Haskins tallied the secondary assist. That is where things would remain at the end of regulation.
The only action in the overtime frame came from the Capitols excellent penalty kill, which went 5-5 tonight. With 2:05 left in the extra frame, Tyler Haskins would head to the box for hooking. Madison's penalty kill stepped up once again and superbly killed the 4-on-3 Green Bay man advantage.
A trio of Simon Latkoczy saves and a gorgeous Kyle Kukkonen backhand beauty were all the Capitols needed in the shootout to secure their ninth victory of the season.
"We always say no excuses no distractions around here. They are very committed to that. This was a very mature win for them tonight," Madison Capitols Head Coach Tom Upton said. "They could have packed it in and figured that it wasn't our night but they made it their night, which I thought was excellent on their part and obviously Simon made some big saves when he needed to."
Despite only finding the back of the net twice in 60 minutes tonight, the Capitols outshot the Gamblers 40-32 this evening.
Madison takes the mini two week series between the Gamblers 2-1 and will now look to Youngstown for their next three games. The Caps will hit the road next weekend to take on the Phantoms before they return home the following weekend for a one game series with Youngstown.
