Lancaster's Offense Erupts For Five Home Runs To Win Series Opener

The Lancaster Barnstormers defeated the York Revolution 11-7 in the opening game of a three-game series on Wednesday night in front of 4,164 fans at Sovereign Bank Stadium, cutting York's second half lead in the Freedom Division to half a game. There was no shortage of offense as both teams combined on 30 hits with Lancaster collecting 18 of those. The Barnstormers also hit a season-high five home runs that accounted for nine of their eleven runs as they grabbed a lead in this season's "War of the Roses Series", 7-6. The series continues at 6:30 p.m. Thursday night at Sovereign Bank Stadium.

In the first inning Lancaster put the Revs in an early 2-0 hole right off the bat. With 2B Gilberto Mejia leading off the game nailing a line drive double off the top of the Arch Nemesis, LF Adam Calderone followed by blasting a home run to right.

York answered right back in the bottom portion of the inning to cut their deficit in half. As 2B Ramon Castro reached first base by slapping a single to left, he proceeded to score when Calderone misplayed a single by DH Jose Herrera as the Revs got on the board and were within 2-1.

Lancaster's offense continued to stay hot early adding a couple of runs in the second inning to take a 4-1 lead. The Atlantic League's leading home run hitter, 1B Tommy Everidge, crushed a towering home run to left also plating Calderone who tripled in the previous at-bat.

In the third inning the Barnstormers received another two-run shot compliments of C Matt Tupman, making it the third consecutive inning Lancaster hit a two-run homer as their lead grew to 6-1.

Everidge hit his second home run of the game, a line drive solo shot to left in the fourth inning to increase the lead for Lancaster to 7-1.

The Barnstormers hit a home run in a fifth consecutive inning as CF Wayne Lydon slammed a two run shot to right field which also scored SS Iggy Suarez making it a 9-1 game in the fifth.

The Revolution brought in a run in the bottom of the fifth inning cutting the Barnstormers' lead to 9-2. With 3B Vince Harrison reaching base by lining a double to the right-center field gap, he was then brought home on a single to left by C Octavio Martinez.

York played small ball in the sixth collecting a barrage of singles to chip away at the Barnstormers' lead. With three straight singles to load the bases, 1B Chris Nowak smacked another one to left bringing in Castro for a run. Harrison followed with a hard hit RBI single to left scoring Herrera. The Revs added one more run in the inning as LF James Shanks crossed the plate when 2B Liu Rodriguez grounded into a double play to put the game within reach at 9-5.

The Revolution added a couple of more runs the next inning as Herrera launched a two run homer to deep left-center field bringing York within 9-7.

Lancaster added an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning when Calderone hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Mejia increasing their lead to 10-7.

The Barnstormers tacked on one more run in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by Mejia, his fourth hit of the night, giving them an 11-7 lead.

York starter Jesus Sanchez (1-2) took the loss only pitching into the third inning while giving up six earned runs on seven hits and three walks.

Lancaster starter Yunior Novoa (3-2) earned the win giving up five runs (four earned) off of eight hits through five innings.

The series continues Thursday night at 6:30 with York starter Dumas Garcia making his first appearance of the year against Lancaster's J.D.
