Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release

Waldorf, MD - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs reactivated third baseman Travis Garcia on Wednesday afternoon after the slugging third baseman rejoined the team after a two-month stay in the Mexican League.

Garcia spent the months of June and July playing for the Saltillo Sarape Makers where he hit a robust .327 with 11 homers and 30 RBI. At the time of his departure from the Blue Crabs, Garcia was one of the most feared hitters in the Atlantic League, hitting an even .300 and tied for the league-lead in homers with 10.

2011 is Garcia's fourth season in Southern Maryland. In his previous three seasons, Garcia hit an aggregate .298 with 36 homers and 154 RBI while also spending a brief time in the Seattle Mariners organization. It was with Seattle that Garcia reached his highest level of minor-league ball, playing in the double-A Southern League for West Tennessee.

Garcia began his professional career in 2003 after being drafted in the 21st round by the New York Mets. He has a career .296 average with 118 homers and 532 RBI over a nine-year career.

To make room for Garcia on the roster, the Blue Crabs inactivated right-handed knuckleball reliever Joe Gannon. Gannon is currently 1-1 on the season with a 5.79 ERA in 16 appearances, including one start.

Southern Maryland starts a three-game series and home stand tonight with Camden. First-pitch is at 7:05. The Blue Crabs will send righty Nick Green (6-5, 4.28 ERA) to the hill against southpaw Carlos Vasquez (7-3, 4.05 ERA) for the Riversharks. The game can be heard on www.somdbluecrabs.com.
