
Lancaster Wins 11-9 In 13 Innings

LANCASTER, PA- The Lancaster Barnstormers defeated the Somerset Patriots 11-9 in 13 innings in front of 3,806 fans at Clipper Magazine Stadium on Tuesday evening.
The Barnstormers plated a pair of runs to break a 9-9 tie in the bottom of the 13th inning when leftfielder Michael Woods reached with one out on a wild pitch after striking out and came around to score on a two out walk off home run to right by first baseman Matt LeCroy (5).
Somerset struck first with a run in the top of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead when leftfielder Michael Ryan crushed a two out solo home run (10) to right.
Lancaster answered with four runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 4-1 lead. Second baseman Lloyd Turner led off with a single to left, moved into scoring position on a walk by Woods and came around to score on a two out RBI single to left center by LeCroy. Catcher Manny Mejia followed with a double down the left field line and then centerfielder Jutt Hileman hit a three run home run (8) to right to clear the bases.
The Patriots got a run back in the top of the second inning to make it 4-2 when first baseman Vito Chiaravalloti ripped a two out solo home run (13) to right center.
The Barnstormers added two more runs in the bottom of the second inning to extend their lead to 6-2. Third baseman Kevin Kotch led off with a triple to right center and scored when Turner followed with a RBI single to left. Turner then came around to score with two outs on a RBI single to center by LeCroy.
Somerset plated another run in the top of the third inning to make it 6-3 when Ryan drew a two out walk, moved to third on a single to center by designated hitter Josh Pressley and scored on a RBI single to right by third baseman Matt Hagen.
The Patriots scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fourth inning to cut the Barnstormers' lead to 6-5. Chiavavalloti led off by being hit by a pitch and moved to second on a walk by catcher Travis Anderson. The Barnstormers then committed a fielding error on a one out groundball to third by centerfielder Sean Smith that allowed Chiaravallloti to score and second baseman Teuris Olivares followed with a sacrifice fly to right that plated Anderson .
Lancaster added a run in the bottom of the fourth inning to widen their lead to 7-5 when Woods hit a one out solo home run (6) to right.
Somerset tied the game at 7-7 with two runs in the top of the fifth inning when Pressley led off with a single to center and came around to score on a two run home run down the left field line by Hagen (9).
The Barnstormers rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 9-8 lead. Hileman hit a one out single to left, moved to third on a bloop single to left by designated hitter Dave Adamchick and scored on a RBI single to left by rightfielder Jordan Herr. Adamchick scored the go ahead run on a Patriots' throwing error on a fielder's choice ground ball hit to second.
The Patriots tied the game at 9-9 with a run in the top of the ninth inning when shortstop Elliott Ayala drew a lead off walk, moved to third on a stolen base and a Barnstormers throwing error and scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Smith.
Barnstormers' reliever Ricardo Gomez (3-2) picked up the win, throwing three scoreless innings allowing one hit while striking out four and walking two. Patriots' reliever Brian Reith (4-2) suffered the loss, allowing two runs on one hit while walking two and striking out three in 2.2 innings pitched.
With the loss the Patriots dropped to 36-28 on 2008 season while the Barnstormers improved to 28-37.
The 2008 Somerset Patriots season presented by Ford will continue on the road until Thursday, July 3rd when the Patriots return to Commerce Bank Ballpark for a 7:05 pm game against Freedom Division rivals, the Newark Bears.
