Lancaster Stormers News Release
Lancaster had runners at first and third with nobody out. Newark had two outs and no one on base.
However, it was Newark that went on to score four times in the first inning en route to a 6-3 victory and series sweep over the Barnstormers Thursday morning at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
Mike Woods led off the game with a double to right center off Mike Bumstead (5-4) and moved to third on a wild pitch. Lloyd Turner drew a walk, and it looked like the Barnstormers, who had been held to just six runs in their last four games in Newark were off to a great start.
However, Bumstead fanned Danny Gonzalez, Manny Mejia and Jutt Hileman in succession to wiggle out of the threat.
That fired up the Newark offense.
Jose Herrera began the two-out uprising with a single to left center off Eric Ackerman (0-4). Cory Aldridge followed with a single to center, moving Herrera to second, and Val Majewski walked to load the bases. It appeared that Ackerman, like Bumstead had gotten out of trouble as Keith Reed stroked a grounder to short. Gonzalez could not find the grip, and Herrera scored for a 1-0 lead. Randall Simon followed with a base-clearing double as the Bears jumped ahead, 4-0.
Gonzalez singled home a run in the third before a strikeout-caught stealing double play took the Barnstormers out of that inning and Ivanon Coffie scored on a wild pitch in the fourth as Lancaster pulled within two.
That was as close as Lancaster would get. Newark picked up a fourth inning run on a sacrifice fly by Ramon Castro and stretched its lead back to four on Castro's bloop single in the sixth.
The Barnstormers put together a rally in the ninth. Turner singled to right with one out and Gonzalez walked. Mejia greeted closer J.J. Trujillo with a single to left center on a 1-2 pitch, plating Turner and bringing the tying run to the batters box. Trujillo fanned Hileman on three pitches and got Jarred Ball to pop out to third base to close the game for his fourth save.
NOTES: Woods has hit safely in nine straight...Turner is 19-for-51 (.373) since May 23...The sweep was the fourth against Lancaster on the road this season...Lancaster lost its last five games in Newark this season, scoring only nine runs and striking out 53 times...Ryan Cullen did not allow an earned run for the 11th straight appearance...Lancaster will host York Friday evening at 7:05...Josh Hall and Aaron Rakers are scheduled to be the opposing pitchers.
