Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
Bridgeport, CT - June 12th - The Bridgeport Bluefish were unable to hang on to a 4-3 lead heading into the ninth inning as they lost to the Camden Riversharks 6-5. Camden scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to improve their Liberty Division lead to 1.5 games over the Bluefish. Bridgeport now stands at 24-22 on the season after the loss.
Gary Cates started the Camden rally with a leadoff single in the ninth. He scored on a L.J. Biernbaum double to tie the game at four. After a walk to Josh Rabe, Brett Bonvechio drove in the go-ahead runs on a double to left-center. Bonvechio finished the night going two-for-five with two doubles and two RBIs. Cates, Nic Jackson and Ron Davenport all added two hits apiece for the Riversharks.
The Bluefish showed plenty of their own rally power on the evening. Luis Lopez broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning with an RBI single that scored Henry Mateo. Mateo found himself in another tight spot in the bottom of the ninth with the tying run on third base and the winning run on first. The Bluefish second baseman was unable to extend the game as he grounded out to his Camden counterpart to end the contest. Lopez finished the evening three-for-four with an RBI while Jesse Hoorelbeke drove in two runs on his only hit of the night.
Bridgeport starter Barry Hertzler got off to another rocky start, allowing three runs on five hits through his first two innings. From there, he cruised through his final six innings of work and kept his Bluefish in the game. Hertzler struck out three and walked four in his eight innings of work before turning things over to Bluefish closer Wes Wilkerson (0-5) in the ninth. Wilkerson allowed the three go-ahead runs to score on three hits and a walk. Alec Zumwalt (2-1) picks up the win for Camden, coming on in relief of starter Chris Young in the eighth inning.
The Bluefish and Riversharks split the first-half season series at 5-5. From here Bridgeport will host the Somerset Patriots in a three-game set this weekend. First pitch Friday is at 7:05 P.M. in which Bridgeport's Rafael Bergstrom (3-1) will start against Andy Van Hekken (1-1).
