Lancaster Stormers News Release
Despite giving up twelve hits, the Lancaster Barnstormers' pitching staff held the Bridgeport Bluefish to only two runs in a 3-2 victory on Wednesday at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
It was the sixth straight win for the Barnstormers who improved to 12-7 in the second half, preserving their one game lead over the York Revolution in the Freedom Division.
Lancaster starter Nate Reed (2-6) got the win while pitching 5 1/3 innings and allowing only one run on six hits with two strikeouts and no walks.
The Lancaster relievers Scott Gracey, Chad Beck, Marcus Walden, and Pete Andrelczyk only let up one run while giving up six hits. Andrelczyk earned his fifth save of the year.
Bridgeport's starter Cody Scarpetta (1-1) took the loss. He allowed two runs on four hits over five innings.
The Barnstormers runs came in small doses. After Scarpetta let up back-to-back singles to Kent Matthes and Mike McDade, he walked Charlie Cutler to load the bases. Matthes scored on a Luke Hughes sacrifice fly to give Lancaster an early 1-0 lead.
The Barnstormers struck again in the fifth. With one out, Zach Collier drew a walk and Brian Cavazos-Galvez was hit by a pitch. Two batters later, the Barnstormers loaded the based on a Kent Matthes infield single that went under Bridgeport shortstop Josh Prince's barehanded attempt. Collier then scored on a wild pitch.
Anderson Feliz finished the scoring for the Barnstormers in the sixth. Cutler started the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Hughes. Feliz then hit a one out RBI single to center field to give Lancaster their third and final run of the night.
The Bluefish runs came in the sixth and the seventh. After an Ethan Chapman leadoff single in the sixth, Josh Prince hit a deep RBI single to right-center field scoring Chapman all the way from first. In the seventh, with runners on first and second, Chapman hit an RBI single to center off of Beck to score Brandon Jones.
The Barnstormers look to sweep Bridgeport in the series finale on Thursday. The Barnstormers will send right hander Shunsuke Watanabe (5-3) to the hill to face Bridgeport's D.J. Mitchell (5-7). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; rumba1390.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, beginning at 6:45.
NOTES: Walden continued his streak of scoreless innings to 22 1/3...Andrelczyk has recorded saves in five straight appearances and has allowed only three earned runs in his last 37 1/3 innings (0.72 ERA)...The Barnstormers notched their 15th consecutive win over Bridgeport...Lancaster has allowed only 12 runs in its last nine wins.
