
Lakewood sets tempo early; beats Hickory 6-3

The Lakewood Blueclaws tallied three runs in the first inning highlighted by back-to-back homers from DH Jeremy Slayden and 3B Clay Harris and held on for a 6-3 win over the Hickory Crawdads in front of 2,945 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium Thursday night.
Crawdad starter Jared Hughes struck out the first two batters of the game before LF Michael Spidale reached on an infield single. Slayden followed with a two run shot on a three-two pitch. Harris went deep on a one ball, two strike offering.
Lakewood added one run against Hughes in the third on a sacrifice fly ball from Slayden scoring CF Greg Golson. The Claws tallied two more in the fourth on a run scoring triple by catcher Lou Marson and a wild pitch by Hughes.
Hickory answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning against Lakewood lefty Josh Outman. Hickory LF Jason Delaney led off with a single and catcher Steve Lerud homered to make it 6-2. Lerud came home on 1B Tony Mansolino's RBI single with two outs.
Outman (8-5) allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits in seven innings to earn the win. Hughes (1-1) was hit for six runs on five hits in four innings taking the loss. Will Savage picked up his first save with two scoreless innings out of the Lakewood bullpen.
Delaney had three of six Hickory hits in the game. Dustin Craig pitched two scoreless innings for Hickory and Jean Garavito blanked the Blueclaws for two frames.
The two teams matchup at 6pm Friday with a concert from the group "4 Him" following the game. Crawdad right hander Todd Redmond will face Lakewood lefty Justin Blaine.
