Lake County Captains News Release

(Charleston, WV)-West Virginia's Mike Bell grounded a game-winning single into left field in the bottom of the ninth inning Thursday, handing the Power a 5-4 win over the Lake County Captains at Power Park.

Bell's high chopper through the left side completed a four-run rally over the final three innings of the game, erasing a 4-1 Captains lead, and giving the Power a win in the series opener.

The Power (12-14) scored a pair of runs off Captains reliever Matt Loberg, one each in the seventh and eighth, to pull to within 4-3.

The ninth inning became problematic for Captains closer Matt Davis (1-7) when lead-off hitter Darren Ford doubled to left. Davis tried to throw Ford out at third on Lorenzo Cain's sacrifice bunt, but the throw was late leaving runners at first and third. An intentional walk to Angel Salome loaded the bases. The next hitter, Matt Gamel, lifted a shallow liner into right that dropped in front of right fielder Maike Conroy. Ford scored to tie the game, but Conroy's throw to third nipped Cain for the first out.

Bell, who had been 0-4 in the game, stepped to the plate with runners at first and second and bounced a chopper between short and third to drive in Salome with the game-winning run.

The Captains (15-11) have lost all five games against the Power this season. West Virginia swept a series at Classic Park in June.

It was the fifth blown save for Davis this season in 27 chances.

The Captains built a 4-1 lead against starter Steve Garrison. In the third Chris Gimenez had a sacrifice fly to score Juan Valdes who had doubled, and P.J. Hiser hit a solo homer. In the fourth, Valdes blasted a two-run shot to left.

The lead looked to be enough for Captains starter Albert Vargas. Vargas worked six innings allowing one run on five hits. He walked one and struck out four. The West Virginia rally against Loberg and Davis thwarted his chance for his first victory since May 16th.
