Lakeland Defeats Birmingham, 130-122, on Sunday Afternoon

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Lakeland Magic (1-1) spoiled the home opener for the Birmingham Squadron (0-1) on Sunday afternoon at Legacy Arena at the BJCC with a 130-122 victory.

Forward Jay Scrubb led the Magic in scoring with 28 points while also tallying seven rebounds and three assists. As a team, the Magic shot 57.6% from the field and 50% (13-of-26) from behind the arc. Fifty-four percent (70) of Lakeland's points came in the paint and the Magic notched 21 second chance points.

Birmingham shot 54.1% from the field and 35% from deep, with Kelan Martin leading the way with 37 points, a mark that is the second-best single game scoring total in Squadron history.

The Magic led by as many as 18 in the first quarter before Birmingham narrowed its deficit to seven, 34-27, at the end of the first. The Squadron knotted the score at 50 apiece before Lakeland stretched its lead once again, this time to 10, 68-58, at the halftime intermission.

The Squadron outscored Lakeland 64-62 in the second half but never led after halftime as the Magic pulled away for a 130-122 road win.

Birmingham returns to the court on Friday at Rio Grande Valley, while Lakeland plays again on Friday for its home opener versus Austin.
