Bradenton Marauders News Release
LAKELAND, Fla. - After staying within striking distance for the majority of Thursday night's game, the Marauders saw the Lakeland Flying Tigers slip away in the eighth inning in a 9-4 loss at Publix Field.
Trailing just 6-4 entering the bottom of the eighth, the Marauders (21-27) had kept Lakeland (23-25) within three runs or closer the entire game. But the eighth saw right-hander Wilkin Ramos issue a leadoff walk to Carlos Mendoza, who scored on an Esney Chacon RBI-double. Johan Montero replaced Ramos and promptly allowed an RBI-double to Alvaro Gonzalez, who soon came home on a single by Izaac Pacheco, stretching the Flying Tigers' lead to 9-4, the home team's eventual winning margin.
The Marauders left runners stranded on the corners in a scoreless top of the ninth after a Mike Jarvis leadoff walk, a wild pitch, and a Rodolfo Nolasco hit-by-pitch.
Nick Davila (2-3) earned the win for Lakeland, holding Bradenton to one run in five innings while striking out five.
Anthony Solometo tossed four strong innings in his second start of the season for the Marauders, striking out four and limiting Lakeland to one run on three hits. His lone run allowed came in the third inning, when Chacon singled and later scored on a fielder's choice grounder.
The Marauders quickly tied the score, 1-1, in the fourth on a Brenden Dixon RBI-single. But Bradenton would leave the go-ahead run stranded on second base in the inning, and in the bottom of the fifth, Lakeland reclaimed the lead. With Carlos Lomeli (2-3) on in relief of Solometo, the right-hander allowed singles to four of the five batters he faced and also saw a Dixon throwing error allow the go-ahead run to score, and Lomeli was pulled with Lakeland in a 3-1 lead. Roberto Campos then delivered a run-scoring groundout against new righty Darvin Garcia for a 4-1 Flying Tigers advantage.
After the two teams traded a run each in the sixth on a Jase Bowen solo homer and a Gonzalez RBI-single, the Marauders climbed within one run in the seventh. Luke Brown raced out an infield single and scored on a double to left by Mike Jarvis, who then scored on a Deivis Nadal triple, making the score 5-4 with one out. But after a strikeout and a walk, Dixon was robbed of a two-out base hit on a running catch in left-center by Chacon, ending the inning.
Bradenton went just 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position, while Lakeland went 5-for-18, pounding out 13 total hits en route to their nine runs.
The Flying Tigers pushed back with a run in the bottom of the seventh on Dixon's second error of the night, and pulled away with their three-run rally in the eighth against Ramos and Montero.
Three Lakeland hitters recorded three or more hits, with Izaac Pacheco's 4-for-5 performance leading the way.
The series continues Friday with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Publix Field. RHP Po-Yu Chen (0-4, 5.94 ERA) will start for the Marauders against RHP Jackson Jobe (0-0, 4.67 ERA) for Lakeland.
