Lake Monsters Drop 3rd Straight With 6-3 Loss To Tigers

BURLINGTON, VT - Strong pitching from Adam Wolf and Tank Skubal, along with the hitting of Gresuan Silverio and Dayton Dugas helped lead the Connecticut Tigers to a 6-3 victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters in New York-Penn League action Saturday night at historic Centennial Field.

The Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a Dugas solo home run in the second inning and a Silverio two-out RBI double in the third. It was the first homer of the season for Dugas and a league-leading 13th allowed by Vermont pitchers this season.

Connecticut added three runs in the fifth inning without hitting a ball out of the infield. After a one-out walk and hit batter, Silverio and Dugas both reached on Lake Monsters fielding errors to plate one run and keep the bases loaded. After the second strikeout of the frame, the Tigers added two more runs on a Jose King RBI groundball single to short and the Lake Monsters third fielding error of the inning.

Tigers starter Adam Wolf, a 2018 fifth-round pick out of Louisville, retired 13 of the first 14 batters he faced (allowing just an Austin Piscotty two-out single in the third) before Vermont was finally able to put some hits together in the fifth inning to score two runs on three hits. Jeremy Eirerman plated the first run with an RBI triple and then scored on a Marcos Brito two-out RBI singles.

The teams exchanged runs in the sixth as Connecticut got another RBI double from Silverio and Vermont an unearned run on a Payton Squier RBI groundout to score Alfon Rivas, who had reached on an infied single to open the inning. Rivas would be the last Vermont baserunner as relievers Ethan Decaster and Skubal combined to retire the final 12 Lake Monster batters.

Wolf (1-0) ended the night with two runs allowed on four hits with no walks and five strikeouts over five innings for the win, while Tank Skubal struckout six of the nine Vermont batters he faced over three perfect innings to pick up his first save. Silverio went 3-for-5 with the pair of RB I doubles, while Ryan Karstetter went 2-for-4 with two runs for Connecticut (10-12), which has won three straight games.

Vermont starter Jose Mora (0-1) was charged with four runs (two earned) on six hits with two walks and seven strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings to take the loss. Reliever Brandon Withers allowed just two hits with no walks and six strikeouts over 3 2/3 scoreless innings (has given up just one run on seven hits over 15 innings in five outings).

The Lake Monsters have lost three straight games to fall back to the .500 mark at 11-11, having scored just six runs on 18 hits over the three losses. Vermont and Connecticut will play the second of the three-game series at Centennial on Sunday at 5:05 pm.
