West Virginia Black Bears News Release
Granville, WV - With late-game heroics becoming a regular sight at Monongalia County Ballpark, the West Virginia Black Bears overcame a three-run deficit to defeat the Auburn Doubledays 7-6.
West Virginia also pulled come-from-behind victories on July 4 and July 5, helping the team win three of its last four games at home.
Auburn got things started in the top of the second inning. After advancing a runner to third base, an RBI groundout gave the visitors a one-run lead.
Then in the bottom of the third, the Black Bears got on the board. With a runner on first base, CF Travis Swaggerty roped a two-run homer beyond the right field fence to give West Virginia a 2-1 lead.
2B Robbie Glendinning added another run in the top of the fourth with an RBI double that scored SS Connor Kaiser from second base.
With a two-run cushion, starting pitcher Osvaldo Bido was overpowering Auburn batters with his electric fastball. In five innings of work, the righty surrendered just one run on three hits, striking out eight batters without allowing a walk.
With Bido's day finished, the Doubledays capitalized in the top of the sixth inning. The visitors scored five runs in the frame, putting the Black Bears down 6-3.
West Virginia cut into the Auburn lead in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single from 1B Luke Mangieri to decrease the deficit to two runs.
P Miguel Hernandez did his part to keep the Black Bears close. In two and one-third innings of work, the reliever gave up three hits without a run, striking out four batters with one walk.
With a flair for the dramatic, West Virginia retook the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning. Swaggerty started things off with a triple, followed up with back-to-back walks to LF Daniel Amaral and Mangieri to load the bases.
That's when things turned sour for the Doubledays. Two wild pitches and a fielding error on a SS Connor Kaiser bunt brought three runs around to score, giving the Black Bears a 7-6 lead.
Nursing a one run lead, West Virginia called on P Logan Stoelke to get the save in the top of the ninth. Maintaining his spot as the Black Bears' closer, Stoelke picked up three easy out to give his team its tenth win of the season.
Both teams are back in action tomorrow afternoon at Monongalia County Ballpark, with the first pitch scheduled for 4:05 p.m.
