CT Tigers Pounce on Four Vermont Errors in 6-3 Win

Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release

BURLINGTON, Vt. - Left fielder Dayton Dugas hit his first New-York Penn League home run and reliever Tarik Skubal pitched three perfect innings with six strikeouts as the Connecticut Tigers (10-12) pounced on four errors by the Vermont Lake Monsters (11-11) to seize a 6-3 win in the opener of a three-game series at Centennial Field.

Dugas hammered a solo homer to left field with one out in the second inning against Vermont starter Jose Mora (Loss, 0-1), who entered the game with a 0.53 ERA in 17 innings pitched. Mora allowed another earned run in the third on an RBI double by Gresuan Silverio to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.

Mora exited in the fifth after walking a Tiger and plunking another. Chase Cohen took over in relief and the Lake Monsters committed three infield errors that led to three unearned runs for Connecticut. Ryan Karstetter and Silverio scored on errors while Eric De La Rosa came home on a Jose King two-out, RBI single that never left the infield.

With a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth, Connecticut starter Adam Wolf (Win, 1-1) allowed two earned runs including an RBI triple by Jeremy Eiermann. Wolf left his second start with the Tigers following a career-best five innings and five strikeouts with no walks.

Connecticut hit back with another run in the sixth on a second RBI double by Silverio to make it 6-2. The 19-year-old designated hitter from the Dominican Republic led the Tigers with three hits and two runs batted in on Saturday to co-lead the Tigers with 8 RBI this season along with King.

Ethan DeCaster took the hill in the sixth and allowed one unearned run after a throwing error put Alfonso Rivas in scoring position. Tarik Skubal (Save, 1) followed DeCaster in the seventh and silenced Centennial Field with three scoreless and hitless innings of relief to pick up his first professional save. The 2018 Detroit Tigers ninth-round draft pick out of Seattle University combined with DeCaster to retire the final 12 Lake Monsters in a row.

Following their eighth win in the last ten games, the Tigers now sit third in the Stedler Division standings, just two games behind the first-place Tri-City ValleyCats. On Sunday, the Tigers continue their series in Burlington against the division-rival Lake Monsters as right-handed starter Jose Vasquez (2-1, 3.66) pitches against Vermont righty Abdiel Mendoza (2-1, 5.48).

The Connecticut Tigers are the New York-Penn League affiliate of the Detroit Tigers at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, Connecticut. Individual tickets for all 2018 home games, season memberships to "The Club," ticket mini-plans, and Tigers merchandise are now on sale at Dodd Stadium, over the phone at 860-887-7962, and online at CTTigers.com.
