LAFC Plays to 0-0 Draw with Club America in 2022 Leagues Cup Showcase

LAFC made its Leagues Cup debut on Wednesday night, playing to a 0-0 draw with Liga MX side Club America over 90 minutes before falling 6-5 on penalty kicks. The game was the nightcap of a doubleheader at Sofi Stadium, the first-ever soccer games to be played at the Inglewood stadium, that drew a crowd of 71,189.

The Black & Gold will return to MLS action on Saturday, August 6 when it heads to Utah to face Real Salt Lake. That game will kick off at 7 p.m. PT and will be broadcast nationally on UniMas and TUDN. It will also be available on the radio on ESPN 710 AM, ESPN LA App, and 980 AM La Mera La Mera.

NEWS & NOTES:

This was LAFC's first-ever entry to the Leagues Cup. Before tonight's game, LAFC had only ever faced Liga MX opposition in the Concacaf Champions League.

Prior to this evening's draw, LAFC was 2-2-0 all-time against Liga MX clubs. All those games came in the 2020 Concacaf Champions League, including a semifinal victory over Club America.

Sebastian Mendez, who was acquired from Orlando City last month and debuted for LAFC on July 29 against Seattle, made his first start for the Black & Gold.

Goalkeeper John McCarthy as well as defenders Sebastien Ibeagha and Mamadou Fall played the full 90 minutes for LAFC.
