Haris Medunjanin Set to Play his Final Match with FC Cincinnati
August 4, 2022 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
FC Cincinnati News Release
CINCINNATI - FC Cincinnati and Haris Medunjanin have mutually agreed to part ways, the club announced today. The move was agreed upon in order for Medunjanin, 37, to have the chance to move closer to his family. After nearly three years in Orange and Blue, Medunjanin's final match with FC Cincinnati will be against Philadelphia Union on Aug. 6 at TQL Stadium.
"Haris's elite qualities as a player are well known and admired around MLS," said Chris Albright, FC Cincinnati General Manager. "But his character and professionalism are what set him apart from so many others. I'd like to thank him for his time here with us at FC Cincinnati and wish him and his family the best of luck and happiness."
At the match on Aug. 6, there will be a special presentation to honor Medunjanin, who joined FC Cincinnati via the 2019 End-of-Year Waivers Draft. Since the beginning of the 2020 season, Medunjanin has made 69 appearances with FCC, where he scored four goals and added four assists.
"It's been a blessing to play for Cincinnati," said Medunjanin. "To be able to play my final game against Philadelphia, where I had great memories as well, means a lot to me. I'd like to thank my teammates, coaches, and most of all the fans who supported me during my time in the league."
The midfielder re-signed with FC Cincinnati ahead of the 2022 season, where this year he has made four starts in 19 appearances. Medunjanin's 69 regular season appearances for the Orange and Blue are third-most for FC Cincinnati in the club's MLS history (Hagglund - 78, Vazquez - 72).
Medunjanin made a total of 171 appearances in MLS. He started 100 MLS matches for Philadelphia Union from 2016-19, where, in his final campaign in Philadelphia in 2019, he led all MLS players in total passes (2,571), total completed passes (2,182), passes in the opponent's half (1521) and completed passes in the opponent's half (1,217). The midfielder was the lone outfield player in MLS to play every minute of every regular season match in 2019.
In his professional career, Medunjanin has made more than 450 combined career appearances in the top divisions of the United States, the Netherlands, Spain, Turkey and Israel, while scoring more than 50 goals and adding more than 50 assists dating back to 2005. Prior to coming to MLS, the midfielder played for AZ Alkmaar (2004-06, 2007-08), Sparta Rotterdam (2006-07), Real Valladolid (2008-10), Maccabi Tel Aviv (2010-12, 2015-17), Gaziantepspor (2012-14) and Deportivo de La Coruña (2014-15).
Internationally, Medunjanin represented Bosnia and Herzegovina from 2009 through 2018. The midfielder earned 60 caps, scoring nine goals and adding two assists across all competitions. Medunjanin was selected to Bosnia and Herzegovina's roster for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, where he made two appearances in group stage matches against Argentina and Nigeria.
FC Cincinnati return to TQL Stadium for Salute to Service night this Saturday, Aug. 6 against Philadelphia Union. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET, and the game will be televised on WSTR 64, streamed regionally on fccincinnati.com/stream, out of market on ESPN+, on radio on ESPN 1530 while an audio stream will be available via the iHeartRadio app.
