LA Galaxy Take on Carolina RailHawks in U.S. Open Cup

CARSON, Calif. (Tuesday, June 24, 2014) - The LA Galaxy (4-3-5, 17 points) will meet a familiar foe as they continue their quest for a third Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup title when they challenge the Carolina RailHawks at Koka Booth Stadium Field #2 Tuesday night at 4:00 p.m. PT live on Time Warner Cable Deportes and lagalaxy.com. Following the U.S. Open Cup fixture the Galaxy will then return to MLS action when they travel north to face their rivals the San Jose Earthquakes at Stanford Stadium on Saturday, June 28 at 7:30 pm PT live on NBC Sports Network.

For the third consecutive year the Galaxy traveled to Cary, NC to take on the Carolina RailHawks in the nation's longest standing team tournament. In the two previous meetings the Galaxy were eliminated from the tournament. Owning a 25-13-1 all-time record in the Open Cup, the Galaxy have only ever lost to non-MLS competition four times in the history of the tournament. Two of those four defeats have come in the last two years as the Galaxy have fallen to the Carolina RailHawks of NASL in both 2012 and 2013.

The Galaxy have entered the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup every year since 1999, winning the tournament in 2001 and 2005 while reaching the Open Cup Final on two other occasions.

On Thursday, June 26 the Galaxy will support defender Omar Gonzalez and the U.S. National Team as they take on Germany at 9:00 am PT in the third and final match of the group stage. The Galaxy will host a viewing party at the Hermosa Beach Pier from 8:00 am to 11:00 am PT as the U.S. looks to advance into the knockout stage of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Bruce Arena's side will step back into league play this weekend against the San Jose Earthquakes at Stanford Stadium. The Galaxy are 26-18-10 all-time against their bitter rivals, with a 9-13-6 record in matches played in Northern California. The last meeting at Stanford Stadium was an unpleasant one for the Galaxy as the Quakes tallied two goals in added time, including an Alan Gordon goal at the death to give San Jose a 3-2 comeback victory in dramatic fashion. The Galaxy have only one win in their last six meetings against the Quakes, going 1-3-2 dating back to the start of the 2012 campaign.
