Costa Rica Wins Group D, Gonzalez Starts Again
June 24, 2014 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Columbus Crew SC News Release
With a 0-0 draw against England, Giancarlo Gonzalez and Costa Rica finished first in Group D at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
Entering the day having already clinched advancement, Costa Rica could have still finished second in the group had it lost and either Italy or Uruguay won by enough goals to reverse the goal differential tiebreaker. The one point earned by the Ticos was enough to clinch first place with seven points regardless of the scoreline in the accompanying match, which was a 1-0 win for Uruguay against ten-man Italy.
Gonzalez once again started and played all 90 minutes for Costa Rica. He has played every minute so far for his nation in the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
Costa Rica now faces the runner-up of Group C in the Round of 16, which could be any of Colombia, Ivory Coast, Japan or Greece entering the 4:00 p.m. ET matches.
