RED BULLS AT THE WORLD CUP: TIM CAHILL AND ROY MILLER
Despite his team dropping their first two games in group stage at the World Cup, Tim Cahill and Australia put forth two valiant efforts against Chile and the Netherlands. Cahill scored a massive goal for Australia against Chile in the team's opening game of group play on June 13. After the Socceroos fell behind 2-0 in the first fifteen minutes, Cahill powered home a header late in the first half that cut Australia's deficit to one goal. Chile would later score a third goal in the second half to earn the win.
Cahill scored his second goal of the tournament against the Netherlands on June 18. The forward latched onto a long ball inside the 18-yard-box and drove home a left-footed volley that ricocheted off the cross bar and in. The goal pulled Australia level in the 21st minute after Arjen Robben put the Dutch ahead just a minute earlier. Australia would take a lead in the second half after a Mile Jedinak penalty, but goals from Robin van Persie and Memphis Depay lifted the Netherlands to a 3-2 win.
Unfortunately for Cahill, he was unavailable for Australia's final game against Spain after picking up his second yellow card against the Netherlands.
Roy Miller and Costa Rica earned a surprising 3-1 win over dark-horse favorite Uruguay in their first game in group play. After falling behind 1-0 in the first half, Los Ticos used three unanswered goals from Joel Campbell, Oscar Duarte and Marco Urena to earn the win.
Costa Rica then defeated Italy 1-0 to advance to the knockout stage. A goal from Bryan Ruiz advanced Costa Rica to the knockout stage for the first time since 1990. Costa Rica finishes group play today against England before finding out its knockout stage opponent.
THREE RED BULLS EITHER LEAD OR IN SECOND IN THREE STAT CATEGORIES
Red Bulls forward Bradley Wright-Phillips is tied with Kansas City's Dom Dwyer with 11 goals apiece atop the MLS Golden Boot standings. New York midfielder Lloyd Sam notched his sixth assist in the win over New England by delivering a long free kick that Eric Alexander headed home. Red Bulls goalkeeper Luis Robles put in a man-of-the-match performance at Gillette Stadium when he tied a career-high with 10 saves and moved back atop that category with 53 on the season.
